    Lard soap

Here are pictures...didn't turn out so bad considering it was my first time for a bunch of things: swirling, lab colors, titanium dioxide.

    Lard soap

I was wondering if it could be temp related too. Especially since I split the batch before trace so I could mix colors and swirl. (My first swirl btw, maybe I'll post pics later) I'm glad you like the wine soap...it looks a little funny, but I got over that after I used it the fist time :)

    Lard soap

Its only my second time using lard, and it seems like the last time took a while too. Or maybe its because it was only a 1 lb. batch.... I agree, it does make for an awesome bar of soap!!!

    Lard soap

Does lard take longer to come to trace? I just made a batch with 50% lard and it took FOREVER!!!!!

Wine soap experiment *update: pictures added*

Here are pictures from my wine batch. The top is a little crumbly and the inside looks mottled. I'd love to have a wine batch have a nice smooth look like my other cp batches. Any ideas?

Wine soap experiment *update: pictures added*

So, I decided I wanted to make an authentic wine soap. I boiled off the alchohol earlier today and got everything ready. Here is my recipe: Lard 50% Coconut 25% Soybean 20% Castor 5% I do the heat transfer method so I don't have to wait for everything to heat up/cool down and get into...

Thanks....I think I'll tell her to check the Super Walmart first. Maybe she can find what she needs to try a few test batches.

    Making soap in NY

I have a friend interested in making soap who lives in the adirondacks. She wants to know the best way to find supplies and I know that she has a tight budget. Does anyone know of suppliers in the NY area who carry base oils for a reasonable price? Thanks! Heidi

    When do you add milk?

I made my first 2 batches with milk last night... The first, I added the lye to all my milk. YUCK! Orange curdled milk is not appetizing, even if it is in soap. The next batch I did 1/2 water and 1/2 milk but added the milk at light trace. It seems to have worked perfectly.

    Lotion Bar 101

I tried making my first lotion bar yesterday. It was 1 oz. beeswax, 1 oz. castor oil and 1 oz. shea butter with a teaspoon of eo. It is so hard and waxy I could melt it down and use it to wax my legs...as far as using it as a lotion, not happening. Every lotion bar recipe I find online has...

How does this look to you?

I went with coconut because most of what I read here suggested it...and because that's pretty much all I have right now :)

How does this look to you?

I made a batch of soap this afternoon with 2 things in mind. 1. Laundry soap 2. Another rebatching effort (my others have failed miserably, but I think I had misguided expectations  ) So anyway this was my recipe: 29 oz. coconut oil 3 oz. castor oil 5.8 oz. lye 11.4 oz...

Just made my first salt bars...*UPDATE* pictures added!

You might want to read up on salt bars here in the forum. I got some great information when I did a search. I don't think they are supposed to be exfoliating. The salt seems to lose its grainyness (just made that word up :) ). It makes our skin so soft after using it though. Its kind...

Just made my first salt bars...*UPDATE* pictures added!

I was so excited I already tried these bars in the shower....THEY ROCK! I don't know if I'll ever go back to regular bars again. These were totally experimental bars, so I threw in a sample of chromium green I had and a little cedarwood scent to see how it would work in the soap. It...

Just made my first salt bars...*UPDATE* pictures added!

This is my first time to attempt posting pictures...crossing my fingers and hope it works :D The first is of the top of my bars...they look pretty good, but then when you turn them over you can see where they broke and are crumbly. (The pictures aren't the best, crappy camera) Any ideas...

Just made my first salt bars...*UPDATE* pictures added!

I just cut them and probably could have done it a little sooner  They look great on top, but they crumbled pretty bad on the bottom. Any ideas why that happened? Did I just wait too long? I'll try to get some pictures up tomorrow. Maybe that will help with my questions.

I just made my first (very small) batch this afternoon. I did a search on this forum for "salt bar" and found everything I needed to get started. Hope that helps and good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies! I guess I'll have my cutter ready :) I'll just find a place to keep them out of reach.

Just made my first salt bars...*UPDATE* pictures added!

After reading about salt bars here, I decided to give it a try this afternoon. I finished making a small batch (around 2 lbs.) and just checked it. It is really hot and seems to be getting mildly hard. I've read a few times that I should cut it an hour and a half after I make it because...
