What soapy thing have you done today?

I haven't done much soapy this week except use the stuff I've made. My first couple of batches of bar soap are finally at the 4-5 week mark so I can say they're cured enough to use (even though I've been using them already). Pretty happy with those. The shave soap seems to work well as I still...

    Soap dishes....

More for keeping the soap from sitting in a puddle of water in the soap dish and getting soft. I saw them at Walmart, called a "Soap Saver".

    Non-Genetically Modified research resources

Ah, now we're getting somewhere in this discussion. I failed to consider the case where say, a bacterial gene would be spliced into a plant or something. I could understand the concern with that, as it would be difficult to predict how that gene would behave in an organism it didn't originate...

    Non-Genetically Modified research resources

Precisely, which is why I wonder if and why genetic engineering is really any different. It's a philosophical gray area I suppose. The thing that scares me about it is the possible application of it to humans. The possibilities of fighting disease and improving quality of life are intriguing...

What soapy thing have you done today?

@Rune Good luck when you do decide to quit, however you may go about it. It seems like there's a lot of effort going into alternative products so if you can't do snus maybe something else will show up in the future. It looks like here they're going to start selling these pouches called Zyn that...

Turning Lotion Bars Into Deodorant and a Question About Shea Butter

Appreciate the thoughts. I am using magnesium hydroxide powder but I suspect it may be not nearly enough. Next time I try I will up the Mg(OH)2 quite a bit I think. Reading that thread is part of what I mean by "doing more research". I just gotta take the time. But probably more magnesium and...

Turning Lotion Bars Into Deodorant and a Question About Shea Butter

So I realize this thread kinda died out but I thought I'd post an update for anyone who comes across it and may think they want to try this. I tried again with the babassu oil and candelilla wax. The candelilla wax successfully got rid of the stickiness from the beeswax, but the product stays a...

That's how a lot of these brands are. Nabisco and Kraft I think were both owned by the tobacco companies at some point. GE makes everything from kitchen appliances to substation circuit breakers to jet engines. It's pretty rare to have a major brand that's owned by a company that does just one...

What soapy thing have you done today?

If you're interested in quitting smoking, pick up some snus while you're in Sweden. I started using that stuff and was done smoking the same day. Used to have to import it from Sweden but it's become much more widely available in the US which is fantastic.

    After shower oil care

I can't say I'm an expert on this at all, but I saw this and for some reason I feel like I need to help you solve this problem, so I'll share what I've been experimenting with. I made a lotion bar with babassu oil and shea butter. I don't recall the precise recipe off the top of my head, I have...

Are you supposed to add your own lemon or something? Seems like they should make that clear on the box.

    Pouring Things Like Lip Balm

Thanks all. I guess I'm not the first one to think of this problem. Seems like a combination of these things would work the best. The lip balm tray looks particularly useful for this.

    Pouring Things Like Lip Balm

So, I'm not really planning on doing a lip balm soon, but I had a thought that is sticking in my brain. You see, I had enough trouble just pouring the melted lotion bar and deodorant into 2.2 fl oz twist tubes from the Crock Pot without spilling it. How on earth would you get it into a teeny...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I used babassu precisely because it gives you the similar fatty acids to coconut hoping it wouldn't have the bad taste. Doesn't seem to be terrible. I'm not a dentist, but so much of what we consume is acidic and I would think that's part of what causes tooth decay. Higher pH might help...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I think maybe it's better now than it used to be, maybe I did see a smaller bottle of peanut oil at Walmart. I'm not really sure since the last time I was looking at the oils section of Walmart I had a particular soap recipe in mind and wasn't using peanut oil in it. I could do this all day...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I replaced it in the recipe with more olive, so I wonder how it compares to olive. I basically have no idea what coconut oil soap tastes like, so I don't really know how to compare my creation. I do get a soapy taste when I spit which isn't exactly pleasant but not overwhelming. Would it be any...

What soapy thing have you done today?

It doesn't taste good, but this particular recipe doesn't seem to taste bad either. You get a little bit of soapy taste spitting it out but other than that it's basically flavorless. I dunno, it's an experiment mostly. I want my teeth clean, soap cleans. The elevated pH is a bonus. I don't...

    Non-Genetically Modified research resources

Define "ordinary farmer". I'm not imagining mom and pop on the family farm irradiating seeds, but corporate farming can't be that new a thing. And it may depend on what kind of radiation you're talking about too. Nowadays anyone with a microwave can irradiate seeds (not sure if it would do...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Thanks, glad someone thought it was funny. I just hope that my tendency to experiment doesn't really get me into trouble at some point. I read this and had an image of old folks in the home eating bars of soap, and for some reason my first reaction was comical. Then I thought about it and most...

    Non-Genetically Modified research resources

The argument that "once it's processed the modified genes are gone" seems like a lame copout to me. By the time you process it the gene has already done its work. Do some people think that consuming the actual modified gene (a sliver of a DNA molecule) is going to somehow be harmful? If you're...
