    Need advice

It happens about as fast as it cools down. I usually scrape it off and use the top part for other stuff. The rest doesn't seem to dry out. Is this possibly soda ash?

    Need advice

I have made several batches of shave soap. All hot process. All about 50% stearic acid and various other oils depending g on my mood. When I put them in the container and they cool, it is common to see a thicker whiter surface that is wrinkled instead of the creamy soap underneath. Any ideas...

Not silly...manly. if it's dangerous, it has to be good right?

    Mechanic Soap

I would agree on gasoline. But Naptha isn't all that bad. It's used as shop solvent and there are usually a couple part washing stations in any given shop with 20-30 gallons of the stuff. Yes, it will burn, but it doesn't off gas vapors like gasoline and alcohol. It's a fairly heavy hydrocarbon...

My first shaving soap is a success!

My question is this: if the steric acid was not reacted because it was not melted and mixed well, what chance is there of free lye still in the soap?

First try at multi color soap...

I did use 1tsp ppo of sodium lactate. It's still very soft. Next time I will try harder oils. Also was thinking about smearing on a thin layer of some type of non saponifiable oil to help part. Maybe some car wax or mineral oil?

    Hot Process Re-Melt Before Pour

The question remains... Did you inform NASA of this discovery?

My first shaving soap is a success!

It's noticeable, but well worth the extra 10 seconds of effort.[emoji6]

First try at multi color soap...

I tried to take this out of the mold, but it was the consistency of play-doh. The exposed surface was nicely hard, but underneath, not so. Is there any way to make unmolding easier? Some sort of release agent? I have a hobby lobby loaf mold made from acrylic sheets. I finally just used the...

    Hot Process Re-Melt Before Pour

I have one question... Why would NASA be interested in the melting point of soap? Soap is not rocket science. I can say this with credibility, because I am a rocket scientist. Seriously. I am.

My first shaving soap is a success!

My best post shave feel soap is 52% SA, 38% CO, 5% each lanolin and Shea butter. Hot process. Cooked all oils and Shea butter together and added lanolin after the mess cooled a bit. It's a bit more difficult to lather than the SA/CO only soap, but it is a far superior shave soap and leaves the...

    Mechanic Soap

For those of you worried about the skin effects of gasoline, kerosene, or turpentine...maybe Naphtha (lighter fluid) will be nicer while still keeping the solvent action. Another thought would be citrus based degreaser, which works as well as gasoline to cut grease. As a former mechanic, I can...

    Grumpy vent

Being a thick headed father, I can say there is quite a social expectation for us to endure all without flinching. So, good luck.

    Infused oils for color.

Is it possible to infuse color into mineral oil for use in soap? Will the mineral oil mess up the soap? Are there better clear oils for this? Thanks.

First try at multi color soap...

I will most definitely. I figure this will take a few days to harden up though.
