    Stainless steel containers

Stainless steel is fine to make soap. It's steel, iron, and aluminum that will give you problems.

    Bar soap too soft?

Assuming your recipe hasn't changed I would say your Sodium Hydroxide is weak. Perhaps the seal was not properly secured at the factory.

    Glad to be here!!

    Welcome to the addiction. :-)

can melt and pour make "pretty soaps"

Colors do not morph, as there is not Sodium Hydroxide present to do so. However, your colorants and fragrances still need to be skin safe.

    Recipe Recommendation

Like the others said, that would depend on what oils are available.

    Cracking crock pot?

I too am curious. Ceramic is certainly not porous, nor would it retain either the Sodium Hydroxide or fragrance scents after being properly cleaned.

    odor problem cp soap

After only five weeks there was probably still water left in the bars. By putting them in plastic you may have inadvertently trapped said water causing it to stagnate. I am curious. Why did you wrap the bars in plastic?

    Gooey Oil Pockets?

That is an open and shut lawsuit waiting to happen.

    Lye for cleanup

I too let my tools harden for a day or so before putting them into a sink of hot water. I don't want unsaponified oils gunking up my pipes. Already had major plumbing issues from that.

    Weight labeling

I'd have been unhappy too. The net weight is the weight of you product without packaging. If it weighs less than printed on the packaging you are misrepresenting your product. Water evaporates as the soap cures, yes. But labeling with proper weights is the responsibility of the the...

Handmilling/rebatching base for gentle ingredients - is it worht it?

No it would not. After the cook no Sodium Hydroxide remains, so there's nothing there that would be damaged by it.

I think my lye "ate" my color.

Was the colorant in question Cold Process stable?

Scent fading in melt and pour

How much scent are you using? Generally if it's not sticking, you're not using enough or it's adulterated.

When dissolving lye into a water/milk mix, can I add the milk after the reaction has taken place with the water?

You could also freeze the milk itself before adding the lye to keep it from getting too hot.

Palm oil alternatives to this recipe?

How about Shea Butter? It's not a perfect substitute like Tallow or Lard would be. But it is a nice hard oil when you need a non-animal product substitute.

Why can't I tell the difference with milk added?

I see it as more of a label appeal myself.
