    Confessions of a soapmaker

Cleaning out the fridge today...I realized that I have nearly an entire shelf occupied with soapmaking oils and butters. (I got DOS twice that I'm pretty sure was from olive oil in my pantry, which is near a window that gets sun, I'm pretty sure a 5 year old with a crayon could've designed this...

    Confessions of a soapmaker

Re: the spatulas, I don't know if it's this particular brand (although it's the brand that was linked to me when I asked another soaper about it) or if it's the size, but the "MOACC" brand of spatula, on Amazon, the 8.5" size has an edge that is thin enough to properly scrape. I haven't tried...

    Confessions of a soapmaker

I am OFFENDED, Zing, that you are somehow watching what I do at home 🤣 😂 😂 😂 😂 Yessss. I forgot that one. I've taken to hoarding, um, collecting, plastic utensils for just that. Those containers are the best. I use them to separate batter for small batches! One I forgot: You have a...

    Confessions of a soapmaker

So, a few weeks ago, as I was contemplating holding onto yet another plastic container because "I could use this in soap!", it occurred to me how soap making has changed how I perceive and interact with things in my life now. LOL I mean, this isn't new. I think it happens to anyone who starts a...

Superfat CP soaps - can you control what is the superfat

"The lye takes what it wants" is a well known saying for soapers. ;) The only way to "force" a particular oil/fat to be part of the super fat is to add it after the cook during hot process. There is no way to know or or effect what the lye processes during cold process.

ENTRY thread for SMF September 2020 Challenge - Marble stone inspired soap

Not the best picture but for some reason I thought I had more time than I did and I know I won't be able to get it in tomorrow morning. My inspiration was Pietra gray marble. I used activated charcoal to get the deep, dark gray, with two kinds of white mica to get that bright, almost shimmering...

    Help me identify these spots!

I think what worried me/freaked me out was that the spots were very circular and looked like a petri dish. 😳

    Help me identify these spots!

It's definitely not air bubbles, at least not this recent issue. These were raised, and I could scape off with a fingernail. It wasn't there at the cut but appeared after. I cut this batch with a knife. Added: I'm starting to think it was ash based on images I've seen in other places(reddit...

    Help me identify these spots!

I'm coming back to this because I've determined that the spots in the black are a type of stearic spot or glycerin river mottling. It happened in another batch that used activated charcoal. I think it's the charcoal. It's only ever happened with batches, and sections with the charcoal. I have...

    Saturated:Unsaturated Ratio?

@DeeAnna That's a great breakdown of the fatty acids. I'm still struggling myself to find a good resource on what individual fatty acids contribute to a soap and how they interact with each other. I have plenty of soap making books that mention fatty acids, with a few sentences on qualities, but...

CP Soap seems much more expensive to make than melt and pour?

Yeah the prices I mentioned above are for the SFIC non-detergent MP bases so are a little pricier than others. Using some of the standard or craft-store detergent bases, the MP would be even cheaper! Also I LOL'd at the Argan side eye. Agreed! I must admit I just realized that the OP is...

    Allergies

Eh just tell her you're not comfortable giving someone with an allergy a product that you can't say with confidence doesn't have cross contamination. And refuse to engage about it after that. If she does have the allergies she claims, she would be grateful for your candor (and as someone who...

CP Soap seems much more expensive to make than melt and pour?

Looking at my different batches and recipes, per bar, my MP cost more to make than CP. Not always, it depends on what goes into it - expensive fragrance/essential oils, base oils, etc. But on average MP is more expensive. Cheapest MP cost per bar: 1.22 Most expensive MP cost per bar: 1.92...

    Glow In The Dark Mica

I've used the gitd from mad mica with good success. You can see an example of it, swirled with batter that had regular white mica here: https://www.soapmakingforum.com/threads/glow-in-the-dark.80297/ i also used it mixed with non glow white mica for a subtle, scattered effect in a marble soap...
