have you gone to your local farmers market or old time butcher shop and ask for fat scraps? I got mine from a pork producer at the farmers market. he had piles of belly fat lying around.

    Another disadvantage for a Newbie

I really think you should start using your soap, pick the ugliest bar and cut it into 4 pieces, and use one at a time in one or two week increments. this way you can really judge quality of soaps, and know how to answer the question "why do you have to cure soap?" firsthand. just remember that...

    Home rendered tallow/lard?

I was trying to say that there's shortening (hydrogenated vegetable oils) and lard (rendered pig fat). many people think they're the same thing as I've had had supermarket clerks point at shortening and tell me its lard, and friends ask me why they're different. so, maybe go back to your...

    Home rendered tallow/lard?

have you ever asked to buy pork belly? b/c the fat I got was from the belly. made a really white lard. I have no idea what Manteca is so I can't help you there. can you buy beef fat in your halal butcher? and in supermarkets, there's shortening and there's lard. I've had multiple...

    Home rendered tallow/lard?

doesn't hurt to try with chicken fat, esp if you can get it for free. I know it's an oil on soapcalc, so someone's been soaping with it at some point..... when you do soap with it, let us know how it works! as for paprika scented soap, the scent likely won't stick. again, give it a try...

    Home rendered tallow/lard?

I read if you add a bit of vinegar and baking soda to the fat when it's cold in the pot, it doesn't smell that bad. I rendered lard today (for the first time), and I did just that. didn't really smell except when the cracklings were cooking or I opened the lid. smelled kinda like pork bone...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I rendered 3.5lbs of fat into lard, and am now diluting my first batch of LS! now researching what scent to make. thinking something piney and pepperminty for Christmas....

When to add EOs and/or SF to LS?

one more question - is EO rates as a percentage of paste or total weight of LS (paste plus water)?

can be. or if you're not used to using handmade soap, there could be a bit of an adjustment period.

    WTH? Help!!!!!

Agreed. Anytime you have an issue or problem with your soap, please post recipe and entire process so the pros can help. It's easier to diagnose an issue when there's a full picture

    Where to cure????

I've cured in a storage closet before, just on clean shelves. Anywhere works as long as there is adequate airflow. It was hot where I lived, and it was at least 25C in the room at any given time. I put the soap in paper bags after the 4 week cure
