Definitely! What works perfectly for me may be a flop for you, probably in large part due to differences in ambient temperature and humidity. I learned the rewetting trick of mixing water and PS80 from the YT channel “Creative Bath Lab.” I imagine you could also mix PS80 and witch hazel, too...

The stabilizer definitely smells bad while making the product, but for me, it has always dissipated quickly during the cure. Still, I tend to either embrace the brown or find another scent. If I were selling, it might be more important because scents and pretty designs (or non-brown lotions!)...

I prefer to pour mine in mini-deodorant containers (aka giant lip balm containers), like the one pictured below. This makes for easy application while making it easily portable in a purse or backpack. They come in a variety of sizes (.35oz, ½ oz., 1oz). You can also choose from round or clear.

I've only used PS80, which (to my understanding) is more of a solubilizer, and is only at best a weak emulsifier. But to achieve your end goal of a creamy, pump-able shaving lotion, maybe you don't need an emulsifier. I think you were on the right track with using the bare minimum of dilution...

Still seems high to me, but at least it is only half as much as the one you found on Amazon.

Looks like @DeeAnna covered most of your questions, @ackosel. I concur with her suggestion to use a 25% lye concentration to make the paste. It's much too hard to stir otherwise, and it will also be harder/slower to dilute. Plus, the math is so easy with 25%. :) I use 1 part KOH dissolved in 1...

It sounds like you have a good medical understanding of the skin conditions, which is great. One thought is perhaps your grandson could try applying the aloe vera oil on its own, directly to his skin. If he tolerates it well, then you could try layering it over the top of your lotion. That way...

I love that you are doing this to help your family! That's exactly why I got into making soap and lotions, too. 🧡 Definitely leave out the propylene glycol if you are making lotion for sensitive, irritated skin! As for the aloe vera oil, I never heard of that before, so I looked it up on WSP...
