What soapy thing have you done today?

I got my gear and recipes all laid out for taking a swing at this month's challenge, and making dough for next month. Just have to decide what colors I want to use in the soap dough. Had to make up some more of my 'Coming Up Roses' blend, going to use that for fragrance in the hidden heart. I'm...

    Vanillin in whipped soap

Vanilin does discolor soap, but I'm not sure what the minimum percentage is for it to produce noticeable discoloration. I made a test batch with nothing but vanillin for fragrance, and it's nearly black. I didn't use any colorants at all.

EO infused oils for soap scents

I'd love some seeds, or a rooted clump of lemongrass! I've tried using a very strong coffee infused oil as a superfat added at the end of a HP batch. The scent still did not survive, not even faintly. :(

January SMF Challenge -Hidden Heart Swirl

That's what I'm thinking. I'm planning on using one of my regular loaf molds, and splitting it into thirds horizontally, so the middle slab will have the design on both sides, but the top and bottom slabs will only have it on one face.

    What's in your canning/jarring pantry?

I've only ever done a tiny bit of canning, currently I'm really crunched for space, so don't have room for either the equipment or the products. Several years back I made a batch of lemon marmalade that turned out mostly really well. A few of the jars didn't set up (and that puzzles me, it...

Using soap dough like polymer clay

Those look neat! Does your soap dough ever harden up? The batch I made to play with a few months back never did, the chunk I have along the back of the sink is still soft enough to easily dent with a finger, after several months.

    Face cream

I know BHT is an anti-oxident, probably included to help retard rancidity of the cream. The other three... wow. Google searches for them turn up info that makes me wonder why in the world these ingredients are included in a face cream. All three of them are classified as skin irritants...

Lots of air bubbles in cp soap

As long as it's not zappy, should be okay to use. My first batch I did something similar with, had it in a too warm oven for hours. It went a bit rubbery and looked kind of weird, but it's great soap now.

    First Timer :D

Yes, you can add more lye, but you'll need to hot process the result so you can check that you haven't added too much extra lye. You're basically rebatching at that point. There is no making soap cure faster, though being in a very cold room might well slow it down. Temperature of your...

    Curing sented soaps together?

There are only a couple of scents that I've noticed try to migrate into other soaps. Peppermint is pretty aggressive, I got a couple of peppermint scented bars for the Secret Santa exchange and had to sequester them away from other soaps because it was trying to colonize. Vanilla can be a sneaky...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Tried out my Bud Hafner loaf splitter for the first time tonight, cutting this: http://www.soapmakingforum.com/showthread.php?t=68689 I'm officially in love with that loaf splitter, and I foresee a whole lotta horizontally split loaves in my future.

    Not quite as planned...

The first cut made me reconsider just how I wanted to cut the whole loaf up. I had originally planned to cut each half of the loaf into bars, with the face showing ending up as the narrow side of the bar, but after seeing that I decided to split the entire loaf into slabs and cut those up...

    Dehydrator

Initial though is that it may well speed up the water evaporation part, but it's not going to do a durn thing to shorten the time needed to cure since the water evaporating is only a part of it. If all you want to do is dry out the drippy wet soap you had in the freezer, it may work well...

Fragrance oils being used and sold as all natural soap

Because the phrase "all natural" has no real legal meaning on labels. It's a buzz-word, intended to sell whatever it's slapped on.

    First Timer :D

Welcome to the obsession. When (if) it solidifies to the point where it feels like a firm cheese (cheddar or similar) when you press a finger into it, that's when it's ready to come out of the mold. I'm going to guess that you don't have enough lye in there to turn all the oils into...

    Not quite as planned...

Heh. Just means I'll have to try the original idea again. Oh, noes! :) I'll have to come up with some totally different fragrance, alas. Oh, noes again? I think it's going to stay pretty yellow, the scent is mostly rose absolute, with small amounts of other EOs to add a little complexity. Smells...

    Not quite as planned...

I'm looking forward to seeing what the inside winds up looking like, yes. And of course I'll post pics! It's going to make a lot of bars. That's a bit over 5 pounds of soap.

    Geode Bombs!

Those look awesome! Touches of black or dark brown might work well with bronze for making it look rock-like. Sparsely mottle with the darker color(s), then top coat with the bronze.
