Suggestions for an ambitious first timer.

My 14 year old son wanted to give soapmaking a shot. Bless his heart, he has seen me in my prep mode of watching a million videos, reading books and this site before my each of my soaping days..."oh, here we go, mom's making soap again". So, I made him watch all four of Soap Queen's videos...

    Recipe Help

I just copied down a recipe that Weavers Port just included in another thread (originally contributed by Lenaree). Not sure if you're good with using lard... 60% lard 20% avocado 15% coconut oil 5% castor I personally can't wait to try it!

    White and black practice

Thank you kindly. It is pretty freakin black in the black. I used activated charcoal in almond oil and just kept adding it until it was as black as black can be. :)

    White and black practice

Thanks everyone. I cut it too soon I think because there's drag marks in many of them. Stupid drag marks.:head banging: Here's a couple. I LOVE that jasmine smell coming from them. I hope it sticks around after cure is done.

    Resource Help please.

I have both of Ann Marie Faiola's books. They were helpful to me as a beginner and I still refer to them from time to time. However, if you haven't used the Sticky for "How to Search on SoapMakingForum like a Pro" I'd recommend that for questions you may have regardless of any book (as Susie...

    Recipe thoughts, first post!

Welcome DeerBunny! I would only add to this that using milk in CP soap can be tricky... there's a lot of info online and in this forum about different ways to do it - I'd read up on that before you use it in CP soap, unless you've already done that :)

    White and black practice

You know what? I was thinking the exact same thing. I have a feeling I'm going to do a lot of white and black soaps!

    Serious Problem...

Carolyn, I have been a soap making FREAK lately and have tons. I am only a hobbyist and don't sell it. My son told me, "Seriously? You are making MORE soap? Where are we going to put THIS batch mom?" I can send you some! Most is ready to use now. Let me know. :)

    Thank you, Toxicon!

I only started soaping about a year ago, but I'll tell you that I used more expensive "luxury" butters and oils at first, and those bars were nice. Then, a few months back, I started using just lard, olive oil, coconut oil and castor oil, and those bars are just as nice. :)

    White and black practice

Hey all, Happy June! Trying my hand at white and black today. What a godawful mess activated charcoal is! I will be finding splats for months throughout my kitchen I bet. I used my badger paint mixer today and it's awesome- so glad I got one. Used Nurture's Death and Decay FO...

ooops! I did it again! (Lye safety)

I have done this three times now. Once on the top of my foot and twice on my forearms (once through a shirt and once on just bare skin). I didn't even feel the drops when they hit my skin, and didn't see them either. But after a minute or two I felt itching and burning where the batter...
