Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

Thank you so much! Yes, it was quite the rollercoaster, and I was very grateful to have the mountains set aside. Now, the soap in your profile picture was a REAL rollercoaster. I read all about your experience making that one. It came out beautiful! The oils were exactly as I had initially...

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

As promised, I'm back with an update about my experience dividing oils and making scenery soap. Let me start by saying I'm not new to soaping. However, I am fairly new to designs and more luxurious oils, etc. So this was a fun experiment for me. I've done one other scenery soap before...

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

Thank you penelopejane. You've put my mind at ease. I was overcomplicating this whole process, I'm glad I asked. I'm definitely taking your advice and will rewrite my notes when I'm done. I have a binder I keep my soap notes in and some make more sense than others. I'll attach a photo when it's...

The MAX fragrance you would add to soap..

Hi Emmamia, I was actually quoting FragranceGuy's post about adding FO to soft oils and adding EOs to heated oils. It's a method he plans on experimenting with. I haven't tried that method personally. There are several people on the forum who marinate their EOs in Kaolin Clay for at least an...

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

I plan on doing at least three layers two need to set up and I'll be using a scraper to shape them. The third layer will need to support a column of soap I made a few days ago. Thank you for all the reference material! I know how I'll be spending my evening, my husband will be so jealous. 😊...

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

I'm excited to make it! I don't think the FO I have planned accelerates though. I will definitely keep that in mind for my next batch. I'll probably do what you recommend for the sculpting and get a heavier trace. Thank you!

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

Thanks Zing, I assume you had less than you expected because it's nearly impossible to scrape all the soap and lye out of their respective containers? Approximately how much would you say you were off? Estimating how much extra I should make.

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

This is VERY helpful! Can you jog my memory? I think I'm supposed to know what the numbers 100 and 33 represent but not sure off the top of my head. I wasn't sure if I could divide out the lye solution the same way I would the oils and was getting caught up in that detail. Thank you! This...

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

Thank you for the tip! I've done the blend to emulsion only method, but not adding FO in smaller bits to the parts of the batter. I think I'll try this when my design isn't as intricate as the one I plan for next week.

Am I over complicating this? Dividing Oils

Hello, I plan to make a scenic soap next week and have been looking up how to divide my oils, so I mix them and my lye solution in parts. Using my standard soap loaf recipe, instead of mixing all my oils and lye in one go, I plan to divide them into smaller parts in order to have more time to...

The MAX fragrance you would add to soap..

My gut is telling me to add EOs to my heated base oils before stick blending and then add my FOs at light trace. I don’t know why, just a gut feeling. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it works! Wow, I actually have something to contribute here. That doesn't happen often. You may want...

A wish for consistency of UNITS! Is it only me?

I also find the conversions a hassle. I am not mathematically inclined at all and find Google and a calculator to be my best friends when soaping. I do all my measurements in grams except fragrance. Fragrance I take the recommended percentage multiply it by grams of oil, then convert grams of...

How much do you spend on packaging/labels?

I have labels a designer created for me in Adobe. The only way I found to edit the files was to subscribe to Adobe. Would I be able to edit my labels in Affinity instead? I'd love to get rid of that monthly payment. I am not graphically inclined and only use AI for labels. Thanks!

How much do you spend on packaging/labels?

Wow, that looks really nice. I initially thought all the info from the label was stamped onto the soap. I only figured it out because I zoomed into the picture to see what you were talking about. Really looks great!

    Is this Greed or Business?

Wow, that is extremely unethical. You should definitely look into trademarking if you haven't already. I don't know much about it personally, but I know the Indie Business Network has a class (possibly free for members) on trademarking. Your story makes me wonder if the guy was even a professor...

Proper discard of large quantities of rancid oil

Since I plan to discard the oils anyway, maybe I should try to clean my larger batch. I've never done this before and it's probably a good learning process to go through. If I mess up, it won't matter! Thank you for your thoughtful reply, I appreciate it and you've given me something new to...

Proper discard of large quantities of rancid oil

What about DOS and the smell?

Proper discard of large quantities of rancid oil

Thanks Gecko! I'll do that. It looks like I'm waiting until May 18th for disposal. That's when my city has the next hazardous waste drive. They also recommended contacting local restaurants to see if they would include my oil with their discarded fryer oil.
