My Eczema soap is still too harsh...

I am with DeeAnna on this, I totally get that lowering the pH will render a soap a non soap and I have done this on purpose just to see what it ends up like, you do indeed get a fatty mass which is more akin to a fatty cream which certainly was not soap in my experiment. I was also under the...

Lard CP soap for clothes washing

I tried all of that too but still found that it would separate somewhat as the food processor wouldn't make all the particle size the same size and weight which meant that the dustier stuff would fall to the bottom and in general it was not a "proper" even mixture throughout. I do add 5% KoH to...

Lard CP soap for clothes washing

I gave up pre mixing washing soda, oxytocin's bleach and grated soap as the particle size are always different and tend to separate in the container, I find it much better to mix at the time of washing to keep a continuity and balance.

Shaving soap - tallow or dripping?

Aha SeaSuds beat me to it! yes SK sell Tallow. In my experience here in the UK dripping as in beef dripping is quite soft and usually scoop able, but suet is quite a hard fat, is this because it has a much higher stearic content? I dont know. I think when you are able to buy the real think suet...

    How Beneficial is Soap Really?

Would be interesting to know, I am dubious about that theory personally as much as I would like it to be true. I do find water plumps up the skin yes ( I am a male by the way so perhaps use stuff in a slightly different way) but that does disappear reasonably fast. Any glycerine on the skin in...

    How Beneficial is Soap Really?

I think your example explains perfectly. and I too am only thinking that adding Glycerine to shave soap and not to bar /bath soap would make the big difference. Yes I agree that glycerine is indeed very humectant and a spray of water/glycerine would indeed make a difference, but then you...

    How Beneficial is Soap Really?

Another thing with comparing shop bought soaps and home made, is that comparing apples to oranges? I feel and I have zero proof of this that shop bought soaps probably have a far higher % of CO as it is perhaps a more cost efficient option which as we do know is far more drying on the skin...

    How Beneficial is Soap Really?

I also dont think there is any point in using expensive ingredients in soap. Like everyone says a well balanced recipe does it all, some luxury butters added for creamier lather I do find nice but they dont actually benefit me other than a feel good creamier / richer lather IMO. The glycerine...

    Phenolphthalein Use in LS

Makes sense to me, pH.....( potential Hydrogen I believe ?) Never felt tempted to go the phenol route, my tongue lets me know.

    Phenolphthalein Use in LS

But surely, Zany and I may be wrong here but in the post regarding "Carrie using phenol and it changing colour just 5 minutes into the process it is because the paste had not yet fully saponified and a tongue zap test which is what I have always used would have proved positive also with a zing...

    Dog soap for shiny coat

I completely agree with the other two posters, BattleGnome was spot on. I would advise you to not go the soap rout for any hair human or animal, there is nothing wrong with a nicely made shampoo, liquid or bar. As BattleGkome stated dogs skin pH is higher than human and around the 7....ish mark...

    Water distiller UK

Have a look at this. https://www.buydistilledwater.co.uk/distilled-water/3-5-litre-distilled-water.html Distilled is the best I think for most cosmetic purposes.

    Frankincense & Myrrh FOs

I have not found any FO to be a dupe of the real thing. I have often made soaps from the EOs and they always have the right aroma, yes church like, incense like, smokey but I don’t really get the sweet thing as in vanilla in the EO. All the FOs I have tried ( UK only) and they number many have...

Is homemade laundry soap really a good idea?

That really surprises me as I find totally the reverse. I use a chelator in the actual soap along with washing soda and oxcybleach put into the machine, the glass on the front of the machine is not covered in scum so it seems to be working. Laundry is definitely cleaner than when using a...

Is homemade laundry soap really a good idea?

I make my own laundry soap and have not used detergents for a couple of years, my water is very hard but with the addition of washing soda and oxybleach as its called here in the UK the results are IMHO far superior to any detergents whith all of their claims, and which I did not find worked so...

    My fragrance keeps disappearing

I must agree it is horses for courses! We here in Europe were of course forced into what we are now used to, I guess it’s a bit like giving up sugar one have you can’t go back, but don’t quote me on that one cos the cheat is a piece of cake with the tea without sugar don’t how that would work...

    My fragrance keeps disappearing

Yes indeed it is very interesting. We are over here thinking oh my goodness what a huge amount of FO it must knock your socks off and you are thinking how stingy what is the point of that tiny amount in soap I must admit that in my laundry soap I do put in 5% as it is only for me and it gets so...

    My fragrance keeps disappearing

Megan we have to have a safety assessment issued by a cosmetic chemist to be allowed to sell soap in Europe and it is the cosmetic chemist who will write into our assessments at what level we can use certain EOs and FOs which contain certain chemicals. I realise to most of you that you would...

    My fragrance keeps disappearing

I fourth what has been said. Here in Europe we have a maximum allowable level which is around the 3% mark but more often 2% for many FOs or EOs. For me testing has been the only way to know, out of the bottle means nothing, once it’s in soap it will do what it wants, either fade into...

Best Anchor/Fixative for an Orange Essential Oil?

Now I do not find that an anchor actually anchor's asKiwiMoose finds, to me it is the aroma which lingers in the ends despite many saying that it does anchor including many "Noses" in the perfume world, but I just do not find that my orange EO stays like no tomorrow cos it had a little anchor...
