How many different recipes do you use on average?

I'm pretty boring. I have 1 bath bar that I use as my base for everything. I'm not a fan of salt bars, but I do like a soleseife soap for my face, but that's just my regular bath bar made with brine. I make 2 LS: one is clear and made with rosin and apple cider vinegar for my KOH solution...

    What's in your canning/jarring pantry?

This has been a great thread to read! So many great stories and pictures; it's nice to know that this skill won't be lost any time soon. My grandmother canned everything: pears, peaches, pickles, tomatoes, and yes, even REAL mincemeat--with beef and suet! My mom still cans a lot. Myself...

    No more ButterEZ

Others will know better (I haven't used ButterEZ), but I don't think it's quite the same stuff. I was loitering-about on The Dish and saw that there is a discussion about ButterEZ. If anyone has access, you should check it out as there is some talk about a possible DIY solution. Alternately...

Fragrance oils being used and sold as all natural soap

I sell, and there's a larger lotion/soap business about an hour away. I use NG Cracklin Birch FO and it's very popular. They have a fragrance line called White Birch. It smells exactly like CB, but they label the fragrance as made with natural EOs and hydrosols. . . . That's how they get...

    MMS/SoapCalc

I recently switched from 76 to 92. At the time, SoapersChoice listed different SAP values for them, but not anymore. There wasn't much of a difference, though. Remember, SAP values are averages; you'll drive yourself crazy trying to keep up with it. As for the citrus oils, I had a bottle...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Beautiful--and one of my favorite scent blends, elurah! I just put together a batch of soap made with Maple Sap that I had in the freezer from last year, and I scented it with Vermont Maple Syrup from SOS. I did add some finely ground and sifted oatmeal to this batch (I typically make an...

    superfatting question

My basic bar has a cleansing value of 13 (20% coconut), and I use a 1% SF (I also test my NaOH for purity). Personally, I don't like a high SF in soap. I tried a bar from another soaper that was highly SFed, and I broke out from it. But you may be different. Besides, I don't use much in...

    East Coast Members

I admit that I tend to run hotter than most! We've got a newfie and he LOVES to play in the snow. So much so that it's usually pretty difficult to convince him to come in. But this cold! Even he's been dancing to get off the ground--and when his business is done, he heads right back for...

    East Coast Members

I'm in the northern mountains of NYS (about an hour from the Montreal border). We're pretty used to the cold, but not this early in the year. They're forecasting windchill temperatures of -45F (-42.8C). Honestly, once it get's to about -10F, anything colder feels the same. You'd think you'd...

    What do I call it?

My two scents -- If it's just for you (or friends/family), call it what you wish. If you're selling, take some time to come up with a name you can live with that customers are going to understand. As others have noted, Bastille has a meaning among soapers, but the general public...

    Foaming dispensers

Try: www.sks-bottle.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=foamer You can buy bottles with pumps (lots of 12). It's a great company and shipping is fast (but I live within a few hours of them).

    No more ButterEZ

I've never used ButterEZ, but I just stumbled on this: Softisan 378 Has the same INCI as the stuff from making cosmetics, and they have a 2 oz size. And it's REALLY expensive ($16 for 2 ounces), so probably won't work for you. . . .

When soap goes bad....life isn't the same

I'm so sorry for your loss. The hardest thing I've ever had to do was make that decision for a pet. My first dog. . . and he filled such a whole in my heart. But it was the humane thing to do. . . As for the soap, I've given up on lavender (fo and eo). For some reason, it turns my soap...

Anyone try Essential Depot stacking molds?

I use them (I have 3), and love them. I don't do HP, but I've done CPOP in them and they work great. I even put them through the dishwasher. I've had my first one for almost 3 years (I ordered it 12/21/14), and it's held up beautifully. Definitely grab them on sale (like now!)

    Adding cologne to soap???

I'm with cmzaha on this. I tried it very early on in my soaping career. I don't remember much about that batch (as in, how the actual process unfolded), but I do remember that it was CP, molded in a Pringles can, and scented with Stetson. IT SMELLED AWFUL! The lye so badly morphed it...

    Consistant bar sizes

In any case, I don't think anyone can just slap an FDA warning on a product (isn't there an application process?). Even so, it's not for use on soap and cosmetics: Reference Gale, M. (2015). Soap & Cosemetic Labeling. Broadbent: Cinnabar Press.

Good starting oils for CP soap

How much water did you use? Lye concentration can have a lot to do with how quickly the soap can come out of the mold. I use HO sunflower, hydrogenated soybean (Soy Wax), coconut, and castor, with a 38% lye concentration.

    fragrance problem

How is the coconut milk included? Are you using it to dissolve your KOH and NaOH, or are you adding it after the cook? If after the cook, it's possible that it wasn't mixed in completely and has turned rancid. Also, how much (what percentage of) coconut oil are you using? I can't stand the...

    Coffee fragrance in soap

I think it's all about perspective. I used to work in a bakery and every Friday I would walk into the bank with my paycheck and hear one compliment after another about how good I smelled--even though I thought I stunk! After all, not many people want to smell like a walking jelly donut. . . ...
