What soapy thing have you done today?

I did use chicken fat twice, in smallish amounts luckily. It makes soap rather soft. On the positive side I discovered schmaltz and love it! Of course the chicken was home bred, grass fed and running about, not caged.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Bought 1kg of pig lard in the farmers market for only 2,40 €. And talked the vendor to make a note to spare me the suet from a bull they're butchering next week. And he promised to spare the suet from the kidney area (so I'll have leaf tallow?) Now I am well stocked with fats and will have to...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I shreaded a large-ish piece of my own made soap my daughter returned after it has been heavily used by her boys and broken in two. Added a bit of water, warmed a bit several times, with stirring, and got what seemed to me like whipped soap with lumps in it. Placed the mass into a small...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Now that I've taken photos of my entry soap and posted them I was able to tackle bevelling and planing the bars of my two previous failed batches and transfer them to the wooly&soapy room to cure.

May 2021 Challenge Entry Thread - One Pot Wonder (OPW)

These are my challenge entry bars: Soap in the improvised loaf from top: The unmoulded loaf: And the decanting pitcher: I used mostly beef tallow and lard, with smaller additions of coconut, olive and HO sunflower oils, 33.33 % lye concentration, lemongrass and bergamot FOs...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I bevelled and tidied all the bars of the last three batches (made for this month's challenge). I will have to check the printouts, they will very likely be completed with the addition of pictures and final observations. (Plus half of one sheet got soaked with oil I'm preparing for cream making...

Making blue jeans - need advice please!

You will have to use cotton thread not polyester, the latter won't shrink during washing and won't produce the wished-for pucker.

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

@ResolvableOwl , this is a brilliant idea! Although I bought three jars with a spout for this challenge (with a view to use them in my projects-to-come of course) they were not enough for the challenge project. The problem is I buy milk or any other drink in a carton only very very rarely and...

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

Hurrah! I cut the loaf this morning to be greeted by lovely bars that look like the ones in the instructions video. I did "make every attempt to make a soap for the challenge" - in fact I made three. In the first attempt I used colours inappropriate for CP, consequently they were eaten up and...

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

Prepared a third try of OPW soap, with the same colours as yesterday + indigo. I think I recognized the right trace now, added fragrances and divided the batter for colouring. I had bought three jars with a spout and could pour comfortably. The soap may not look ideal but does come nearer to...

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

I made my second try at OPW soap. I don't have a loaf mould and made one from a carton box lined with baking paper. The batter was too thin and I didn't get the nice layers I was after. Moreover, the carton leaked. I'm curious what I'll see when I cut it 🤔

What soapy thing have you done today?

I like lemongrass FO so much I always have a bottle or two at home. There's rarely a batch without it.

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

So I unmoulded and cut my first try at the One Pot Wonder to obtain this: I can't say it's a disappointment cause I knew the dark violet was meant for MP soap. I tried to melt it first in warm oil ant then in soap batter and passed it through a strainer but spots are still in it. The part that...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Unmoulded a tiny mould where I filled the scrapings from my pot and jar and glasses. It did come readily off the wallls but the edges were crumbly. Aaah, obviously I'll have to wait at least till evening ...

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

I did my first try. I used two colours and noncoloured batter for white - hope this counts? I just don't have three colours of the same type that I really like together so only used two. I improvised a loaf mould using a milk carton. I somehow made it to resemble a tall and skinny mould but then...

SMF May 2021 Challenge - One Pot Wonder

    1. peachymoon - I’ve been wanting to try this! 😄 2. dibbles - I wonder what colors to put in my one pot 🤔 3. AliOop - this one has been on my Try List, too! 4. Tara_H - great excuse to keep trying this! 5. Vicki C - oh this looks like fun... 😬 6. Jersey Girl- Another technique I’ve been wanting...

    Lard and duck fat

Chicken fat made my soap softer but other than that I can't refer anything more: it was a small batch used soon after 6 weeks cure.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I threw away the third bag of raw beef tallow. It was kept in a refrigerator and I kept an eye (in fact a nostril) on it to notice any smell of degrading traces of blood on it. I noticed none and prepared the table to start cutting it. It was only then I saw mould on the surface of chunks...
