    My fragrance reviews

Watermelon Sugar retains scent beautifully and was one of my top sellers. It smells more like watermelon Jolly Ranchers than watermelon fruit, I think. Helps to enable you mean? 😉

March 2024 SMF Challenge - Stone Soaps!

Yes I did mention this in the intro, and @AliOop had said she was thinking of it. I am not sure about the toxicity of caulking and what could leach into the soap. I think silicone caulking uses solvents that create strong fumes - these might dissipate and the silicone might be safe when it is...

    Botanicals in soap

I’m not a fan of botanicals in soap either. Lavender buds look like mouse turds in soap, there really isn’t a good time to add them because the lye will make them turn dark brown, and they really don’t add anything to design or fragrance. Some people add lavender buds to the tops of their soaps...

    My fragrance reviews

Thank you for this! I keep notes on fragrances too in Google sheets, and I add a color block (highly subjective, and based on my eyes and color on my screen). Here is an example - the notes on fragrance are incomplete.

    Yay for broken ankles

Oh no… so sorry to hear this. I was thinking about @dibbles a lot last summer when she had her accident, I’ll be thinking of you. These things happen in an instant and just change everything. 😞

    Mobjack Bay 2024

These soaps are astoundingly beautiful! That blue and green soap… I’m awestruck…

    What silicone to chose?

Great! I would also like to hear how it works.

    What silicone to chose?

Hi there - I mentioned in the stone soap intro that I used Brick in the Yard two part silicone. They have great products and are very knowledgeable, and could probably advise you on which of their products to use for your project. Here’s a link. https://www.brickintheyard.com/

Well, my rock molds have the bumps and craters that the original rocks had. Personally I would just leave them, it probably looks better than you think. Here is an example. Those little craters were also on the rock, along with the frown. (I always see this one as a frowny face.)

    Trace & Temperatures

Off to a great start! You mentioned you were thinking of making pine tar soap - that’s kind of tricky, very fast moving, but if you want to take it on I HIGHLY recommend using @DeeAnna ‘s process outlined here. https://classicbells.com/soap/pineTarSoap.asp I have used it probably ten times with...

    Third Time Lucky Lavender?

I wonder about rose clay. I think it is in general kaolin clay that is colored pink after it has been mined with iron oxide. The language in the vendors’ descriptions is not clear to me - but Brambleberry lists the INCI as Ingredients (INCI Name): Kaolinite, Iron Oxide Which makes it sound...

    Third Time Lucky Lavender?

Huh. I’ve never seen that before. How odd. When I have seen DOS it is browner and starts as dots.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Not @Mobjack Bay but I’ve done a bunch of fragrance testing lately too - I make a batch of soap and then weigh 50 grams of soap at a time into a Dixie cup, and then using a jewelers scale I measure in the fragrance oil. 5% default unless the usage rate is lower. I have some smaller silicone...

    Third Time Lucky Lavender?

Thank you! I think I sort of knew that, but in my mind I was picturing very old shrunken soap in my mother’s bathroom that didn’t have DOS. And yes your info on rancidity is excellent, I now use ROE in my master batches and sodium gluconate in my lye.

    Third Time Lucky Lavender?

How frustrating that the mica should be making it rancid. When you say rancid, was it localized DOS or global rancidity with that gross smell that the soap I gave my mother over 25 years ago that she won’t use because “it’s too pretty” has? If it’s DOS could there be metal contaminants in the...

March 2024 SMF Challenge - Stone Soaps!

Hmm that’s too bad. I wonder why it’s so expensive there? Hand molding is always an option. Amy Warden made some very realistic granite soap but I can’t find the video - she used three colors of shavings, like white, brown, and black maybe, and molded them layer by layer. I also saw a video from...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Yeah I have moved to high oleic sunflower - I made a bunch with high oleic soy, which I also liked. I don’t notice any difference between either and the olive oil, they might take slightly longer to trace which I don’t mind. I bought the high oleic sunflower on Webstaurant.com, it says it is...
