    Hello from Alaska!

It doesn't really get that cold in the part of AK where I live. I doubt it got colder than -20*f this whole winter. Granted I work in the Arctic blast on Alaskas northern coast and cold is the norm there. What I can't handle is heat. Anything above 70*f is to hot for me.

    Hello from Alaska!

Guess I should have done this earlier, but what the heck I'll do it now. My name is Chris and I live in Alaska on the beautiful Kenai Peninsula. I have so many hobbies the list of what I don't do is probably shorter. But I love making things especially using Alaska grown or Alaska harvested...

Where do you keep all your soap?

I don't sell my soap yet so I only make smaller batches. I do have some plastic bread trays but they're a bit big for what I need. But what I'm using now are the plastic trays used for delivering soda bottles. Their lightweight, have handles mold in, holes all the way around, and they're...

A tip for labeling lip balms.

So I have a friend who designs/prints all my labels for me. And he does an amazing job. I buy the blanks give him some ideas and he designs/prints them out. So when he made my wine bottle labels this year for my homemade wines he suggested I use a book of the proper height to help me line the...

    A couple Lip Balm Questions

I always tend to overfill and the filler tray is great for that. I could probably get by without a major spill but I'm sure I'd spill a few drops. Especially since I add labels to mine. It would be a major headache for me to have to clean each tube so I could get the labels to stick properly...

    A couple Lip Balm Questions

I love my silicone lip balm filling trays. I usually make the full 48 tubes at a time but making less is easy. Just put masking tape over the unused holes. So far I have just been using peppermint essential oil for scenting/flavoring. I infused sweet almond oil with rose petals, Fireweed flower...

    Buying lye

I'm on the Kenai Peninsula. But I work on the North Slope 2weeks on 2 off schedule. So we are on the road system. But stuff is still more costly than the L48 states.

    Buying lye

I can buy lye locally here in AK at a hardware store by buying the Rooto brand drain cleaner in a 1# container for $7.50. But that is the best I've been able to find locally. What I have been ordering is reagent grade lye from eBay. The brand I buy is Molly's products and I get a 5 lb jug of it...

Made some more bath bombs and my first lip balms!

As I said in my post above you are researching/ referencing a totally different plant. If you'll follow the link I posted you will see the plant that I am referencing and how it is vastly different than the plant you are referencing. I am using a plant we call Fireweed here in Alaska. It's...

Made some more bath bombs and my first lip balms!

I usually do measure my stuff by weight for my soaps and things. But for the liquid oils in my lip balms I used the basic formula I found on several online sources that stated 2 oz beeswax to a cup of oil. It worked out great! As far as the Fireweed flowers go you are thinking of a totally...

Made some more bath bombs and my first lip balms!

A buddy's kids have been begging me to come over and make some more bath bombs with them. I made bath bombs with them once before and they really really enjoyed them. We had trouble aligning our schedules and so they bought the kids some bath bombs from The Box store and apparently some of those...
