    Washing soap materials question?

I use 2% SF as I have hard water and soap scum is my mortal enemy. I am debating on dropping that to 1% as you really only want enough to prevent a lye heavy soap. I may even go down to 0% if I can convince myself to not "test" early. But I tend to start using bars at 4 weeks, just to test mind...

What advice would you give to your beginning soaping self?

^^^This!!! There are no mistakes. Just happy accidents. Some of the best designs I have done were not originally intended.

How do I go about finding a female doctor in the US?

I only use female doctors if at all possible (unless you mean gynecologist which is a doctor that treats patients for female issues). I would look on my insurance's web site and go look at the provider list. Often they have pictures of the doctor, and some times the names will help you identify...

    Washing soap materials question?

The only thing I wash during soaping multiple batches is my SB stick. Everything else gets stacked in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. The next day (once it has saponified), I pour hot water in the bucket, let it sit until I can stand to put my hand in, then the soap gets scraped off (dough scraper...

Fix for Dreaded Orange Spots on just one type of my soap

Sesame oil has an incredibly short shelf life. I store our sesame oil that we cook with in the freezer. Rancid oils=DOS.

    Liquid Soap

Are you using distilled water? Using tap or well water can bring unexpected results. I have made many dual lye liquid soaps, and at every 5% of NaOH:KOH ratio. I have never had one come out white. Might I get your full recipe? As for getting thicker LS, the only way to get it thicker is to add...

Always need lotion after my soap!

I have tried lotion bars, and lanolin lotion bars. Even when applied after a shower, they never held enough moisture in my skin. I am happy to say that I finally found a lotion that works. I am sticking with it.

Always need lotion after my soap!

I have also found that the relative humidity in the air makes a huge difference in how often I have to apply lotion. I am from humid Louisiana, and I am easily using three times as much lotion now that I have moved to DFW. Even southeast Texas had more humidity than up here. And aging does not...

    Fixing LS that tests cloudy

As you well know, part of the beauty of liquid soap is that you can dilute when you like. I find that no waiting is necessary, but I tend to make enough paste to have three batches to dilute. So, I dilute one while I still have all the mess in the kitchen, and store the other two.

    Fixing LS that tests cloudy

I never use the clarity test. I understand that oil choices affect clarity way more frequently than doneness. I use the zap method of testing for readiness as it is unable to be mistaken. If it does not zap, it is done.

    Soap Wont Cut Smoothly

When I switched to this cutter, all of my problem cuts ended: https://smile.amazon.com/PH-PandaHall-Cutting-Candles-Trimming/dp/B089DHSXGF/ref=sr_1_57?crid=3I1A31J6H2LWE&keywords=soap+cutter&qid=1647091578&sprefix=soap+cutter,aps,93&sr=8-57 But I was also much more experienced by then, so I...

New here and need help with my liquid soap recipe...

https://www.soapmakingforum.com/threads/soaping-101-liquid-soapmaking-video.46114/ I use the recipe in post #8. ^^^This!!! My hair won't tolerate it. I learned it the hard way and lost a LOT of hair. But if it works for you, go for it.

    Where do i start.. help!

I developed eczema and could no longer tolerate the only commercial soap for sale. I decided to try making soap so that maybe I could make a soap that I could tolerate. It worked. My firm opinion is that it is not what is IN the soap, but what ISN'T in the soap that makes the difference. My...

How many different oils do you use in your soap?

I use 4-5. Same basic recipe, just sometimes I substitute shortening for lard, and it has two ingredients rather than just one. I have had as many as twelve oils in one recipe until I actually started testing soaps for what I and my family enjoyed. Now I just keep it simple: 65% lard, tallow...

    Lye question

I would adjust the amount of lye also. Lye does not "go bad", but it does absorb moisture. Which then throws your weight off of the amount of lye needed. If you are not experienced enough to do the adjustments needed to get the proper amount of lye. I would mix with an equal part of water and...

The Guy At The End Of The Bar...

I had a springer spaniel. She was more spring than dog until just past her 2nd birthday. Then she became a lap dog that we had to go throw the ball/stick/whatever was handy for hours a day to exercise so she wouldn't get fat.

    Coronavirus

So much good and so much truth in this post I didn't want to delete any of it, so I bolded what I wanted to address. ESRD patients qualify for Medicare just by being ESRD. They can get dialysis for free. Your social workers should be on this situation with all hands on deck. That would mean...

A soap as a drug? From a local soap maker.

For me, it is definitely what's NOT in the soap. Other than needing to stay away from high amounts of CO, I have made almost every kind of soap there is with good results. I have blind tested all of the major kinds of soaps on my willing family (who also have eczema) and every one agreed that we...

    stick blender question

I have always tilted my bowl to be sure the SB is down in the deepest part of the batter. Keep it tilted and rock the bowl to ensure even mixing. I use one that has a bell like shown above. Never could get the other bell design to stop giving air bubbles.
