    Soap top full of mold

Simplest answer is to stop using them. I suspect that they are absorbing moisture from the soap and becoming a great place for mold to grow.

    Opinions on recipe modifications

I would add the shea amount to the lard, use OO rather than Sunflower Oil as it is much cheaper here, pare down the castor oil to 5%, as I have never found any reason that bar soap benefits from more than that. I would add that amount to the olive oil. I would really suggest trying one small...

Testing Liquid Castile Soap... not translucent

I find I get opaque paste when I stick blend too much (puts bubbles in). Doesn't matter. You will still have clear soap. I always use 3% superfat, and never cook soap any more. Cold process is quick and easy and so very much less stress.

Possible issue? (1st time liquid soap)

If you heated your soap, it might have overheated a bit. But it is nothing to worry about. Just go ahead and dilute as planned.

    My first cold process recipe

The fewer the ingredients and the more locally available they are increase your likelihood of continuing to soap. I started with oils I could buy at the local Walmart and for the most part, I have circled back to that. I find no benefit for me and my family from the more expensive butters. I do...

    What’s with the spots?

If you drop your water % to less than 33%, you can soap hotter without seizing. Add your EOs right at the end to avoid seizing. I love spice EOs, so I have learned to plan a single color, low water~30-31%, use silicon molds, and have a sink of ice water waiting. I only do one mold size at the...

    Coronavirus

I have thought this more than once. My relatives (bless their hearts) think this about me. I now watch them freak out about whether we will have to prove vaccine status to fly or gather in large numbers. I understand that each side thinks the other is doing something incredibly risky and...

    Coronavirus

I am happily vaccinated. So are all the members of my immediate family. I am the definition of a person with co-morbidities. I took the steps I deemed necessary to be as safe as possible. I have members on all sides of my extended family who are vehemently anti-vaxxers when it comes to this...

    Curing

I am no longer a member of any FB soaping groups as they are always full of misinformation. And the more ridiculous the claim, the more they seem to support it.

Liquid Soap won’t get out of the gel phase

If I am making soap before work, I just get it to emulsion. If I am making it on my day off or ran myself completely out of soap before making more, I get it to paste. I like having options.

Liquid soap is over cleansing and drying?

Go to Soaping 101 liquid soapmaking video? IrishLass gives 3bees1flower's recipe in post 8. I know that thread is a beast, but it is loaded with good information about making liquid soap.

Liquid Soap won’t get out of the gel phase

You don't actually have to cook it. You can just mix it until it is emulsified and then walk away. It will do the rest alone.

Should Beginners Try Their Own Recipes?

If you want to try your own recipes, go for it. But if you do a little homework before hand, you may learn things that will save you money on ingredients (wheat germ oil goes rancid quickly). If you look through the beginner section and the recipe section, you will find lots of our opinions on...

    NS Mad about Mint

I have had trouble with every mint EO and FO I have purchased in the last 2 years. And they are from many different suppliers. I don't know why, but I have resorted to using mints in only single color soaps with huge water discounts, soaping with no sugars, and right at room temperature to help...

    Tetrasodium EDTA separated....

I tend to soap now in 15 lb spurts due to health/life/time limitations as that is how much soap I can make in one go as determined by the number and sizes of molds I have. So I masterbatch all my water based/non-lye ingredients (simple syrup, EDTA, etc) in a "just enough" quantity for that...

    CPOP: Cold Process Oven Process

The idea is to get that soap into an environment that is hot enough long enough to force it to go through gel. And you only want to do that when you either get no gel (and want it to gel), or you get partial gel. This is a method for rescuing bars that would otherwise not be as pretty as you...

Too much water in soap! Can I save it?

Double the amount of water in relation to the lye, or double the amount called for when you run it through a lye calculator? You should always use a lye calculator to determine the amount of alkali and water in relation to the amount of oils you are using.

Transparent liquid soap becoming opaque at low temperature

Most true soap based liquid soaps will turn cloudy in low temperatures, but will return to clarity when they warm up. Nothing to worry about.

Need advice from the left handed people

Not trying to be a downer here, but I have had to deal with a lot of stroke patients over the years. Some of the are able to train their non-dominant hand to function reasonably well with lots of hard work. Just remember the more you practice now to get that muscle memory going in your...
