    Jewelweed in PT soap

Well, I nailed it on the first try. Did my recipe, hand mixed the hard/softs to emulsion at a little bit higher than room temp, and dropped in the pine tar. Maybe about 10 swirls with the spatula and that tell-tale little dull greasy sheen popped up in one corner. Stopped stirring...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Ordered a ton of stuff today as one of my pieces of mining equipment finally sold. Got this little slab cutter: https://www.etsy.com/listing/683446066/multi-position-soap-log-splitter-and?ref=shop_home_active_1&frs=1 Picked up 38 new mica colors from Mad Micas. Pine tar got delivered, the...

    Jewelweed in PT soap

One month of soaping, and it's a fun little journey so far. Whipped up 17 different batches and 2 or 3 have really been supremely inspiring in developing...new and creative combinations of profanity. Mostly that has been due to FO's not behaving like reviews said they would, not having an...

DOS but Oil Doesn't Seem to be Rancid

Have you thought about using louvered ceiling light panels? No idea how much weight they will bear, but they give plenty of circulation and can be cut to size with a hacksaw or jigsaw easily. If you google louvered light panels you can see a better photo of them. About 1/2" holes...

    Argggg!!

Check online restaurant supply stores. They come in all kinds of sizes and they get very little love and care in a commercial kitchen.

What is going on in these bars?

I believe you're right. I looked at them closer and what I've seen online in photos it sure looks the same. If I make the recipe again, I'll up the temperature. Palmitic shows as 21 and Stearic at 7 via soapmakingfriend.com.

What unit of weight* do you work with?

I'm new at this and I use grams. College degree is marine biology with a minor in polymer chem so I'm pretty comfortable with it. Plus with my experience in mining, gold is measured in grams and troy ounces. Our explosives were small scale so we measured everything in grams there. I liked...

    How much, is too much??

I believe soap making is like any new endeavor, you need a few years to know what you don't know. You get the big picture ideas, and then start to slowly master details. It took me about 3 years to teach myself geology and gold prospecting to have a good handle on what to look for in a gold...

    How much, is too much??

I was looking at craigslist a few days ago in Phoenix and saw someone who is selling soaps that look like a child put them together out of modeling clay. I guess people see that there are seemingly few barriers to entry to becoming a salesperson. Personally I like doing this because it gives...

What is going on in these bars?

I'll get a good close up tonight. I did scrape the sides of the bowl I use, but I had a medium and then pretty heavy trace at the middle and top layer. The lightest actually had to be spooned into the mold.

What is going on in these bars?

Are the lighter sort of horizontal lines glycerin rivers? Recipe is 50% lard, 25% RBO, 20 CO, 5% Caster. 5% superfat, 1 tsp of salt PPO as a hardener. FO is Vanilla Lavender from Bulk Apothecary. Black Oyster and Snow White from Mad Micas. The gold pencil lines didn't turn out worth a...

    sick of scents

I love fruit scents. Always have. Floral are bleh to me and I've not been shy about my thoughts on regular patchouli. Nature scents are also pretty alluring for me as well.

Is it worth adding FO if....

Got that papoose bookmarked now! Thank ya!

Planer and Beveler - updated recommendations?

That's my big problem too, but I ordered Bud Haffner's wire cutter as folks seem to love it here. Should be here this week so I need to make some batches to break it in. I liked his log cutter, but this one here might be the cat's meow...

Eeek! Does anybody actually use with this oil!

I got to smell both side by side today at Arizona Soap Supply. Dark patch I think isn't bad at all. Regular light patch? I'd rather kiss a duck's butt than smell that again.

    How much salt until crumbly?

    Hardener more than anything.

    How much salt until crumbly?

Curiosity more than anything, but how much salt can you add to a batch based on PPO until it starts to be required to cut within a few hours? I know it is less than 20% for sure as I dealt with that amount last week.

    Preservatives

It is; use a preservative. I'm not sure how to put this plainly, but please consider if your product has grown mold already you're putting people's lives at risk. What if someone with a compromised immune system used your product at the home of the friend who had the mold growth? If a type 1...

    Woohoo! Newbie milestone!

Well....Already donated to the dumpster. I didn't think it would be salvageable since it was a single hard lump. Did some hunting through the forum and found several alternative company's FO's in the same scent profile. I'll try it again sometime in the next few weeks.

    Woohoo! Newbie milestone!

Tried a new recipe tonight, nothing extravagant. OO, Castor, Shea, Coconut with a 10%SF due to a high coconut %. I wanted to do an apricot/peach because I love fruity scents. Always have. Read the review we have here in the FO review sheet. It says to keep it simple. No problem, I'll just...
