    Tiger Stripe Kitty Soap!

The tiger stripe technique has always intimidated me for some reason. But I decided it was time to go big or go home. Pretty happy I did, too! I'm so pleased with the way this came out.

    getting the soap out

Ohhh, I really like that! I might have to get some tall and skinny molds soon.

    My soap bars are pitted.

The one downfall of wire cuttersn imo, is that they do make the soap look super bumpy. Planing fixes the issue, if you're going for a smooth and polished look.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Took a few days off of soaping and returned to make this gorgeous drop swirl!

What fragrance makes you think of the ‘90’s?

The 90s for me was Love's Baby Soft (that incredibly sweet baby powder scent just brings the nostalgia back), cherry blossom, and pear.

    Batch notes

I scribble down loose notes while I'm soaping, and then transfer that to an easier-to-read format on the computer - I have a spreadsheet that keeps track of pretty much everything I do. It's helpful because I also do a soaping journal this day, which is more of a diary-style, train-of-thought...

    Just curious.

I usually use the smaller end pieces so that I can get to a new soap faster, LOL. Other people get the benefit of the whole bar.

    Decorating soap tops

I use glitter and mica for different effects on top of the soap. Glitter I just sprinkle on. It gives the bar some sparkle and pizzaz without being overly defined. Mica, I mix with a little oil and drizzle over, which leaves these pretty and defined lines of sparkle. I also make things to put...

What soapy thing have you done today?

After 36 hours of antsy waiting, this soap finally came out of the mold and onto the cutter. I am SO thrilled with it.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Today is a day off from actually making soap. Instead I'm wrestling with this dang wooden mold. The bottom won't budge and it's causing me considerable frustration. I realize I just need to walk away and let the soap do its thing for a while longer, since I used more water to keep the batter...

    Finding the right FO/EO...

Fixing ricing is basically...stick blend it into submission, lol. Most of the time a little more blending will smooth it out! I'm mostly making soap for other people, so whether or not I love the scent, getting an idea of how other people perceive it is helpful for me. If I were making soap...

    Finding the right FO/EO...

I can usually find a use for a FO that I'm not in love with. And what I'm not in love with may be someone else's holy grail scent! I don't particularly care for bakery scents as a whole, but a lot of people love them. I'll usually read the reviews on a FO to see what other people have...

    Grams or oz?????

While I use grams when actually making the soap, I have to admit that ounces comes more naturally to me, and when I'm formulating a recipe I'll usually pay more attention to the ounce measurements. I can just visualize the volume better in ounces, overall.

    First Soap Making Attempt

Oh, that is a VERY pretty soap! The colors are lovely and delicate, and your lines are really clean and neat!

    Teeny Batches, Bigger Questions

I do teeny, tiny batches - 125g oils - to make the ears for my cat soaps. I use the measuring cups I normally use to pour off batter for accent colors to mix everything in. They're about 3.5 cups, and the head of the SB is just barely covered when the oils and lye are in. Just gotta be careful...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I was a little upset when I went to check on my soap and had a bit of an overheating crack in the top...but after unmolding and cutting, I'm actually okay with it. Got a partial gel, and the bars ended up looking like little slices of goth pound cake. As much as I love these kitty soaps, I am...

So 4-6 weeks to cure - how do you know?

Short answer to "how do you know" is "trial, error, time, and patience". I usually start testing about 24-48 hours after cutting, provided it passes a zap test. Test once a week, take notes on it. I have my primary recipe down pretty well, so I already know how it's going to age and...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I always soap in my good pearls. Adds a little extra sauciness to the batch!

    This soap has ears.

I am BEYOND delighted at how these kitty soaps turned out! Fresh from the cutter, before any finishing. I've got the second batch - orange and white - in the mold right now and I already am antsy to cut them.

When is it best to unmold?

I tend towards the 18-24 hour range. I check at 10 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours. 10 and 12 hour marks are usually just me being anxious and making absolutely sure there's no overheating. Usually it's the 18 hour mark, pretty often the 24 hour, and rarely 12 or 48. I had a batch day...
