Question: Is a yogurt container too thin to store lye solution?

I'm starting to think about masterbatching lye in small quantities (enough for maybe 3 or 4 loaves) and was wondering what people think about using these types of yogurt containers (with #5 on the bottom): Is the plastic too thin, or does it matter as long as it's #2 / #5? Thanks y'all.

Just as a point to consider... lye-based soap will never be 100% organic. If you want to spend more money on organic oils, go right ahead, but I personally don't see the point. Soap is a wash-off product... it stays on the skin for maybe 10 seconds before being washed away. Add the fact that...

    Making a wooden soap mold

My wooden support is splattered with all kinds of batter - I just use a pastry scraper to scrape off the chunks when they harden. It definitely doesn't need to look pretty, hehe. Have you thought about finding a silicone liner you like online, then having your dad design the interior of the...

Can anyone tell me what’s happening with my soap??

In the top black/pink bar, the pink part looks like it has some TD crackle/glycerine rivers, caused by using a lot of water: https://auntieclaras.com/2014/05/glycerine-rivers-secret-revealed/ In the second bar, it looks like you have some air bubbles, but otherwise looks fine.

Welcome welcome! As others have mentioned, the cure time for CP and HP is the same. The key here is understanding the difference between saponification and curing. Saponification is the chemical process of the lye and fats combining into soap. With HP, this occurs in the cooking phase. With...

    Newbies random soaping questions

Yeah I think pouring at emulsion might slow things down too. Your recipe doesn't look like it'd cause too much softness. Interesting! I'm sure it'll set up nicely soon.

    Newbies random soaping questions

Sorry if I missed it, what recipe did you use? There's definitely a few reasons your soap could be soft! Using lots of soft oils can definitely cause a slower hardening. I'd still consider 30% Lye Conc fairly high water, I usually stick to 35%. But that's all personal preference. My soap sets...

    Geek Tips

To add onto the Photography tips - I use a free app called Meitu to adjust my photos. They even have a set of "food" filters designed to make your food pics look tastier. You can also do other things like manually adjust brightness/contrast, crop and even remove dust marks. It's pretty great.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Cut my Flame Tree soap. I'm really surprised at the pattern! I was expecting it to look like a mess, but I was pleasantly surprised.

    Sunflower Oil

I'm in Ontario and have found high-oleic safflower in many grocery stores (Food Basics, Metro, etc). I haven't had luck finding high-oleic sunflower, but the safflower is quite nice!

    salt bars

I personally find that salt bars (with high coconut) trace too quickly for any sort of meaningful design. I tried to do a multilayer salt bar last time and it did not go well lol. And if you pour it too liquidy all the salt will drop to the bottom. A simple 2-colour swirl would work well.

Troubleshooting my first CP soap recipe

Sometimes oils can sweat through if the loaf is overheated, I do it alllll the time. Luckily the oil always seems to reabsorb over a day or two. I usually unmolding after 2 days, then give the loaf another full 24 hours to air out, then cut. This gives the oil plenty of time to reabsorb!
