Glycerin as by-product of soap making

It does make sense. I just wish the people at Health Canada would make the regs easier to follow. How did you discover that your water is about 5%, by the way? I've been listing the water as the percentage that went in because I had no idea how to accurately predict the amount that is there at...

Glycerin as by-product of soap making

Lindy, has the glycerin question finally been decided then? Last I heard (from you, I think) it was under debate as to whether it should be listed or not.

    Soap melting in shipment

CP or HP soap shouldn't melt. In high humidity or heat you may get droplets of glycerin on the surface but that isn't melting. You can either wipe it off or let it soak back in.

    Soap melting in shipment

You mean melt and pour soap?

Slightly slimy and itchy CP soap

Morpheus, OP asked for vegan and Palm-free suggestions. I have a vegan and Palm free recipe that uses 10% cocoa butter to add to the hardness. I don't use canola but avocado oil is really nice. Won't add to the hardness but it really adds to the gentleness of the soap I find.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

Yes, I'm excited to try it. I've been meaning to try making liquid soap for ages and just haven't gotten to it. I've been saving dispenser bottles to reuse even.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

Really? That's great. I had visions of a slick of EO on the top of the soap.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

Awesome, thanks Susie! I also have annatto infused oil so I can try that another time. I have to research how to get essential oils to stay in suspension with liquid soap next.

    What happened to my soap?

I find it's much harder to get a good gel in silicone molds. They just don't hold the heat very well. Was your palm fully melted when you combined it with the lye solution? The temp you listed is much colder than I soap with palm. I think that stearic acid melts at about 160 degrees.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

Got it, thank you. I'll try it this afternoon and report back. I have alkanet infused olive oil that I use for CP, so I'm going to use a little of it to tint the LS (not this first batch). Has anyone used infusion to colour LS? Does it work?

    What happened to my soap?

It's safe if it didn't zap you. Do you normally use a wooden mold? Does your soap normally gel or not? Is this from a new pail of Palm oil? If your palm hasn't been melted and stirred before using, and then completely melted before adding the lye, you can get stearic spots.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

So the initial water for mixing KOH should be three times the KOH?

    Goat's soap

I make many different recipes and I like that I can help people to pick out a soap that fits them. I have some vegan, some with animal products, some with shea butter, some without, some without palm oil, some with goats milk, some with coffee grounds. The list goes on. I really like to make a...

Thanks Susie. Can the SBM calc be changed to 90? I looked but couldn't see anywhere to do it.

    What happened to my soap?

What about this pic is bothering you? The texture? What temperature did you soap at? Any new tubs of oil used? You will have to share more info about your process in order for us to help.

    Cold Process Liquid Soap

I remember reading somewhere in here about which calculators use which % purity for KOH, but when I search the thread it doesn't appear. Can anyone enlighten me? I have 90% KOH.

    Air in soap

It's overheating due to the thermal mass you've got in a huge volume of soap. You would have to keep everything cool. I'd go back to the ten pound molds personally.

    Air in soap

Those percentages only add up to 98.95. Are you pouring as one big block of 25lbs in a wooden mold? Do you insulate? That recipe isn't a super heater.
