the mystery of the instant cure

Wasn't there a soaper on here that was making HP with the addition of sodium lactate to keep it fluid for swirls? Would adding goats milk near the end of HPing create sodium lactate? I don't HP so I don't know.

What does SF mean in a recipe?

DeeAnna actually explained the saponification chemistry on a different thread a couple of months ago, I think. Perhaps if she comes by, she can link to it.

    Soap Maker 3 Software

When you are entering your purchase invoices, there is another tab at the top to enter non-perishables but I can't think what it's called right now. Might just be 'Other'.

What the heck? Surely it isn't mold???

I agree with Vkumudini (I hope I spelled that right!). I have a Kitchen Aid mixer and it has beaters that give off a black substance inside the area where it attaches to the machine, if that makes sense. I have often found black on my hands after attaching the paddle.

    Super fast trace

Who is your supplier on the EO's? I use EO's exclusively and have never had acceleration with any of the ones you have listed. I use New Directions Aromatics.

help me scientifically respond to the "soap is bad for skin pH" claim

I wasn't suggesting the soap is acidic. But when you are done washing with the soap, there is in some cases a tiny bit of oil left on the skin. That oil is not soap, but oil.

help me scientifically respond to the "soap is bad for skin pH" claim

Just thinking out loud here but the oils we use are considered acidic, yes? In the soap reaction (acid/base), the fat is the acid and the lye is the base. Could the fact that handmade soap has a %-age of free fats be leaving a slight acidic residue which helps the acid mantle to re-assert...

    Discouraged

I've been making soap for my family since ~1996. But I only started selling in 2013. My first batches were awful but I thought they were amazing. I knew nothing about curing or what benefits my oils brought or appropriate additives and it showed. Keep reading and tweaking and be prepared to...

Ingenious way to get rid of soda ash!

That was a really well done video. I hadn't seen her work before but I'm impressed.

It's my understanding that they are about $600 per set of frames.

Is this DOS in my Confetti Soap

I do not see any DOS or anything that even resembles it. What is it that you see? Edited: sorry, I zoomed in and I see what you mean. But I second that it's likely your scent causing it. What did you use?

Is this DOS in my Confetti Soap

There isn't a photo? And DOS won't happen that quickly unless maybe you used rancid oils to begin with. Can you post your recipe too? There's likely another ingredient responsible.

    Does water really matter?

How wonderful, thank you! I use distilled or fresh fallen snow exclusively here.

    Surgical Spirits

What are the ingredients on the sanitizer? I don't think this would work but I'm curious anyway. Can you get plastic wrap for food? I've seen some people cover the tops of their loaves to prevent ash. Also, gelling your soaps will minimize ash. Neither of these techniques really work with...

    EO has crystals in jar

I wouldn't put an FO in the microwave. Just place the bottle in a bit of warm water, in a shallow bowl.

Glycerin as by-product of soap making

My usual percentage of water going in is about 19, I think, and then it's cured to wrapping stage at 10-13% weight (water) loss. So that would mean I would have 6-9% water left, right. How long was the cure in Dunn's case? I have the book upstairs, I'll have to look for the info after supper.

    Painted on pencil line?

I think I will try keeping back about 2tbsp of my liquid oils, then adding that to a couple of table spoons of soap batter with my colourant and use that for my line. Then a thin-ish drop swirl.

    Painted on pencil line?

I just went and found the posting and it was a cocoa powder line that made that. I'll have to see if I can find a video.

    Painted on pencil line?

    Yes! How was that achieved??
