jelly crust on LS after EO added

I am diluting my cold-process GLS right now, and I have scented it with lavender EO, another bit with Orange EO, and then the third part will be peppermint. None of them separate and I don't use PS80. Also they only form that skin when I haven't diluted enough. So I suspect you need more water.

    Superfatting LS help? (combining recipes)

Thank you, DeeAnna! I just came on here to research what happened to my liquid soap. I decided to try adding an extra 3% superfat with equal amounts of PS80 to try and it went opaque but did not separate. It was just a small amount of leftover paste, so it was 2.8g of almond oil and the same of...

    Lard/OO/Castor

    Lard/OO/Castor

No, but I suspect it will be lovely. I usually use about 40% lard when I do, and even at that level, it's a really nice bar of soap. Are you planning to whip it to make floating soap?

    Inspired by Some Lardies

I have a friend who makes 100% tallow soap (she farms) with Goatsmilk and the stuff cleans just fine but it has zero bubbles. Not slimy like Castile, just no bubbles. Just an FYI in case that was on your list too.

Rimmed Soap Design for Loaf Molds

That was really cool! She skipped over some bits though- does the poured rim need to gel? How long from pouring the rim slab to assembling the soap? I assume if you wait too long, the two parts might not stick together? I'd love to try this!

    Sugar and Salt

Yes, you have to warm your honey in a bit of water before adding it. I've tried many different ways, and that's the only way that doesn't give me tiny orange spots of honey in the final soaps.

    What's This In My Mold

I've had that blackening from oak reacting with the pH of soap. It's because of the tannins in the oak. I tried using oak for soap dishes and got that reaction. My wood soap molds are spruce or pine, which don't have the tannins. So, I expect you had some leakage and the high pH lye reacted...

Natural Fragrance ideas, help please :)

If you mixed a pink grapefruit EO with a ylang ylang, you might be able to achieve a fruity floral that would complement.

    Are essential oils not allowed?

Thank you for all the replies so far. Our water is about 7.9-8.0 pH (we have quite hard water that is not softened). So, in theory, there is really nothing from the reaction that would be harmful? I wonder why I've only seen the ascorbic recommended for bath water then. I tried some and didn't...

I have been Googling, but I haven't found the answers I need. Chloramine is added to our drinking water here and it is much slower to break down than chlorine (which is why they use it.) I had read that you could remove it from bath water by adding ascorbic acid but wondered if that was safe...

I read through multiple pages on Google and could not find that, thank you. So what are those things? Are they stable? Are they safe to consume?

Lol! Thanks, EG. Although I seem to recall we had 3 or 4 chemists on here at one time. I'm hoping it's a simple calculation.

Completely not about soap, but I wonder if someone could tell me the result of a particular chemical reaction? It would be ascorbic acid with chloramine. I'll find the chemical names for them. BRB. It would be C6H8O6 + NH2Cl in water. It's my understanding that the ascorbic breaks down the...

    Milk soap went moldy....

I would still suspect the wheat germ oil. It will go rancid if not refrigerated all the time, so not something I would use in soap.

    Milk soap went moldy....

Did you do HP or CP? To me, that looks like your wheat germ oil didn't get blended in well enough and went rancid. It has an extremely short shelf life. The white looks like ash to me.

    Melting bulk oils?

Not coconut, but palm for sure. Palm tends to separate into levels that have different fatty acid concentrations. I put my 40lb bucket into a Rubbermaid tote and fill the tote with hot water to melt. Then I mix the oil well and scoop out a few 5lb buckets. Those are easier to melt in the sink.

What EO would you put in a milk honey oat soap?

Umm, all 3 of those are known sensitizers. Most of the people that I've encountered are buying oats and honey soap due to sensitivities (and the perception that it is a gentle soap). I'm not sure you would want to use known problem EOs. What about orange and a bit of cedar wood? Or patchouli? Or...
