Spring Craft Fair_ Keep my Mouth Shut Nope

I was at a craft fair recently where a woman was sellings 'eczema and psoriasis cream' advertised on a big banner. Actually I see people selling things on Etsy that violate FDA rules and nobody stops them..... What really 'takes the biscuit' for me though was seeing a local health food store...

A hard lesson learned in buying EOs

I think the most likely thing is that this is fragrance oil, not essential oil....

    Body Butter Bliss?

I make a really thick lotion and can pour it in while still warm (after it's cooled I can hold the bottle upside down and it it doesn't come out). I use it with a pump.

    Royal jelly in face oil

Royal jelly is water-based so you would need to emulsify it with the oils....

Senate Bill S.1014, the Personal Care Products Safety Act

Is there anything in the bill about having to have a dedicated manufacturing space? I know....I could read it, but I have a headache already!

    Butter Blends?

I think soy generally has a bad rap due to GMO and estrogenic issues. This may be irrelevent for skincare products but I think some people still avoid it as an ingredient.

Fragrances you just cannot stand..whats yours?

Fresh Snow from BrambleBerry. I tried adding lavender and eucalyptus but the nasty stuff overpowers everything!

Seriously, What Happened to the Scent Works?!

The owner's name is Tish Valter Pearl and she is very active on social media, so I find it particularly odd that she is so silent when it comes to her business....

    New and thoroughly confused already

You pretty much have to 'teach yourself' cosmetic chemistry to create your own products. There are a ton of resources to help you, however, including the people who sell the ingredients (Jen at Lotioncrafter is a gem as well as Angie at the Herbarie). It was quite a learning curve developing a...

    Favorite lotion bases

Actually it is not necessarily expensive: see www.sagescript.com/microbiology I feel confident using a tried and tested preservative like Optiphen ND at the recommended rate but if I switch to a more natural system like Leucidal I will get my lotion tested.

    Body Butter - Dead Fish

I would not use a preservative in an anhydrous formula if it was just for personal use. I would decant a small amount to use and refrigerate the rest. I currently use Optiphen ND in lotions and can smell a very slight scent OOB, but at 1% usage it is undetectable. Hope you figure it out!

    Body Butter - Dead Fish

What other ingredients are in your butter? I don't think Optiphen can go bad - does it smell different OOB?

    Scales for small amounts

I use the Jennings 200 scale too but I got it from www.oldwillknottscales.com for cheaper. It's amazingly sensitive. I weigh tiny amounts of FO when experimenting with blends and it will move with a drop or two.

    Summer Lip Balm`- Beeswax Percentage

Thanks Susie, that's helpful. I'm thinking that if I used a fairly high amount of hard butter then I could get away with using less beeswax, which I know can be draggy. I'm wondering if any natural lip balm formula can survive a hot mailbox though ?

    Summer Lip Balm`- Beeswax Percentage

I'm trying to figure this out too. 30% sounds like a good starting point but I guess it depends on what butter you are using.

We should have an ugly baked goods thread ...

I don't think there is such a thing as Ugly Baked Goods. They all look so delicious! Having said that, there are a few disasters on Pinterest Fail: e.g. http://pinterestfail.com/2015/04/03/reanimated-easter-bunny-rolls/
