To Gel Or Not To Gel? That is the question...

I would say you have no idea, but you do! I’m sure we all do! Every week I’m buying more and more stuff for soap making (and pen making, but lately mostly soap). I have a niece with eczema and other skin issues. Last night I purchased oatmeal, pine tar and castor oil. I’m probably gonna be...

To Gel Or Not To Gel? That is the question...

So you can still gel at 33% as long as you insulate your soap? Or is that 33% for fridge and freezer, and if so, what % do you use to induce gel with insulation?

    Hello from Japan!

Alaska I’m from Hawaii, living in California, and work summers in Alaska! I go up for the salmon season. It is absolutely gorgeous in Alaska! I dream about it all year long until I’m there and get to live it for a few salmon infested months...

To Gel Or Not To Gel? That is the question...

I’m having a hard time understanding gelling. I know how to identify it when it happens, and it has something to do with water amounts, but what I don’t understand is what exactly is happening to it, is it a bad thing, why or why not?!? I read Auntie Clara’s blog about it and apparently you...

What kind of cutter is this?

I refuse to pay for just about any soap cutter I’ve seen on the market, professional or otherwise. I’m an avid DIYer and I have construction experience and a good variety of hand and powered tools, so I will be building my own for a mere fraction of the cost. Already purchased the guitar strings...

    Any Pen Makers here?

I’m still a novice pen maker but dang if I wouldn’t kill to get a hold of some burl. The stuff is expensive! When I’m traveling, which isn’t often, I’m always looking at trees and trying to find one with burl that I could somehow harvest.

    Any Pen Makers here?

I’m a fan of complete wood and wood hybrid pens. Pure acrylics are pretty but lack that classic natural, earthy touch and feel. Lemme know when you’re ready to be a Artisan Pen owner! ;)

    Melting palm oil

I forgot where I read it but I do remember something about having to melt down palm oil completely and stirring it up before use so that some type of particles (I forgot what exactly) mix up evenly throughout the oil. If I find the link I’ll post it for ya.

    Any Pen Makers here?

Thank you, All! I don’t sell publicly just yet but I hope to soon. The purple is one of my favorites too but apparently it “had” to be my girlfriends pen. I showed it to her after I finished and just like that I never saw it again.... For my wood pens I use a CA finish.

Looking for plans for shelves like these

Essentially these look like 2 hollowed bifold shoji screens aligned so that you can place wooden planks across it to make shelves. Somewhat genius if you ask me.

    soap cutter

FYI, I just ordered a pack of 20 guitar strings for $9 on amazon. They are the single strings, light weight E, which is thinnest string available.

    Any Pen Makers here?

My latest addiction, which I do side by side with soap making, is pen making! It works perfectly for me because in between waiting for the lye mixture to cool or the hard soaps to melt, I can work on cutting, gluing and prepping the pen blanks to be shaped and put together. My lathe is just...

    Base oil formulating?

    Base oil formulating?

Thank you all for the wonderful responses, advice and the overall welcome feeling! I will be spending the entire day reading up on all the links and info y’all have provided! =) Also, I ended up making a 5lb batch with the RBO and other oils. Will be cutting and posting results later. It was...

    Aloha!

Oh no!!! Thanks for the heads up. Coincidentally odd timing but I’m switching to HDPE racks today! I scored a bunch of stackable soda racks from a vendor at work. I’ve read about the dreaded DOS but haven’t experienced them yet. Hopefully I never will =)

What made you pick your avatar/ username?!

My avatar is me, my name is a play on words. I love to eat, as my waist will prove, and I’m a Hawaiian from Hawaii. The spin is that I’m also hungry for knowledge. I do a wide variety of crafts and projects and am ever in search of new and cool things to do or build.

    Aloha!

As the title says, Aloha! =) Relatively new soap maker, looking to learn as much as I can from you wonderful people. In addition to soap making, I also sew, crochet, make pens, do woodworking and about a thousand other random crafts and projects. To date I’ve done about 5 batches of soap. The...

    Base oil formulating?

I really wish I didn’t impulse buy the RBO but I have so many friends requesting to buy my soaps and I really wanted to branch out from my normal olive oil, coconut and Shea butter batches. Thank you so much for the link! Also, heading over to the Introduction forum now! [emoji2]

    Base oil formulating?

Thank you! Yeah I’ve been using brambleberrys lye calculator but their app is severely flawed and keeps deleting my batches. I’ve tried other calculators but I always get stuck at the lye portion, whereas brambleberry does it automatically, and I have no clue how to figure the water to lye...
