    Transparent Soap Adventures

NO Stearic Acid. NO Ethanol (alcohol). NO Sodium Lactate. VEGAN/ORGANIC Transparent Soap Test! Okay. I feel, after a few days of tweaking and researching, that I have a transparent soap that is alcohol, stearic-acid, SL, etc. FREE! :) I have posted pics of my most recent failures (translucent...

    Transparent soap recipe overview

Thank you! The alcohol evaporates after the lengthy cooking. There is residual alcohol remaining at the end, but after a couple of days of curing, there is almost no indication that it is present (by odor). The denature ethanol I use is denatured with isopropyl alcohol (ISA) and n-propyl acetate...

    Transparent soap recipe overview

Hi Zany. I do have pics of two of my three attempts here. :) I do apologize for the presentation. I'm working on it. :) The one on the right is a lavender bar with clove (opaque). I added too much purple pigment, but they are definitely transparent. The grapefruit bars (orange) were my first...

    Transparent soap recipe overview

I have made transparent soap successfully 3-times. All three times I tried. :-) I discovered Making Transparent Soap by Catherine Failor and it rocks! I use a recipe/technique that is hardly considered work at all and it has given me transparent soap each time w/o fail. I use denatured ethanol...

Sorry to hear about your experience. I wonder if too much of your alcohol evaporated before it could do its job.

    HP soapers.....a question for you

Thank you. Interesting. I did not consider non-dairy yogurts made of soy may also have the same effect as long as they have bacterial cultures that produce lactic acid. I will investigate. Thank you.

    HP soapers.....a question for you

@lsg. Thank you, but looking for non-dairy options. I have friends/family who are vegan. :-)

    CPOP: Cold Process Oven Process

Thank you so much, DeeAnna! This information sheds a new ray of light for me.

    CPOP: Cold Process Oven Process

Aha! Thank you. I did CPOP a couple of weeks ago and saw these bubbles. So, covering with seran wrap while the oven is cooling prevents them. Got it! :-) I am a little baffled regarding the difference between CPOP and HP. Fundamentally, both achieve the gelled state of the soap indicating that...

    HP soapers.....a question for you

Thank you. Yeah, I find it interesting that it helps the soap to set quicker for un-molding AND helps the batter to remain more fluid. I saw a tutorial where someone was also adding a little bit of glycerin with the yogurt. I need to go back and discern what the exact purpose of the glycerin was...

    HP soapers.....a question for you

Wowsa! Just found this: http://www.lovinsoap.com/2016/11/fluid-hot-process-soap-tutorial-recipe-fluid-hp/ So helpful! Fluid HP soap, here I come! I would also like to add that the dairy components (yogurt, buttermilk, etc.) contain lactic acid and when it reacts with the lye, becomes sodium...

    HP soapers.....a question for you

Thank you. Interesting. I often hear the use of sodium lactate for 'hardening' bars, and did come across it being used for helping with more fluid batter, but I am too uncertain with the mixed messages whether to explore this. I will do a little more research and see if there is guidance on...

Thank you, but hoping for a non-dairy solution.

    HP soapers.....a question for you

Hi Holly. I've been itching to get into counter top HP using the method you've seen. I've seen enough to realize that there are advantages and we've all seen some pretty amazing, beautiful bars made from the process. One of my concerns has been that it may be too thick for more fine-detailed...

    Advice Appreciated

Hi Cassie! Welcome to soap making! Whoop whoop! I'm also new to the art and science of soap making and love it! From one newbie to another, I have discovered that there are differing opinions on a few things that I would have thought was fundamental. Either that or I am not paying attention. ;)...

Transparent soap - UPDATE with photos!

Thank you, Mary. My brother loved it! I don't believe I'm going to venture too far from the recipe. As a beginner, such successes build confidence and my brain is now spinning with possibilities. Not going to fix what isn't broken. :-)

Transparent soap - UPDATE with photos!

Dr. J. It appears that is of palm origin. The company that produces it has the product registered with REACH, an EU organization that regulates and certifies(?) products imported and produced in the EU. The organization is in the business of recognizing products that are mindful of the human and...

Transparent soap - UPDATE with photos!

Thank you! I really enjoyed making the transparent soap. I wasn't sure they were going to come out so well, but yippee! I am currently really excited about my new hobby. I have no intention of doing this for anything else other than the creative and scientific curiosity associated with it...and...

Transparent soap - UPDATE with photos!

I love it!!! My second 'official' attempt at making soap as a newbie was transparent soap two days ago . Grapefruit and the color is entirely from the essential oil. Great scent and color. I used the alcohol/lye recipe in Catherine Failor's 'Art of Making Transparent Soap' book. Instant success...
