    What's in your canning/jarring pantry?

I discovered this accidentally because I had no choice the year (2003) we tore off the 100 year old kitchen addition on our farm house to build a larger one. The only time the contractor could schedule it was during the peak of tomato harvest. I did a lot of canning over the open fire that...

    What's in your canning/jarring pantry?

Finally got the last of the 2017 garden canned up. I wash & core my tomatoes, then put in freezer bags into the deep freeze to wait until I have time after the holidays to process. The skins slip right off when the tomatoes are thawed. This batch is for my marinara sauce & tomato water/juice...

What soapy thing have you done today?

You can't take care of other things and other people if you don't take care of yourself first. It's not being selfish. It is self preservation. You can't give what you don't have. Caution though, don't wallow in it, some folks get stuck there and that's not good either. After Christmas is...

Congrats on the new vehicle!! About 49 miles west of me is the river ... are you in the QC or are you east? I rarely get farther into town than just into Rock Falls, unless I'm heading to church ... that's enough town life for me

    Soap fragrance disappearing?

I just went to their website. It looks like they have a fragrance calculator to give you a usage ... it looks as though .88 oz per pound of Soap for a strong scent strength. I wonder if this is for the total soap batch and not the PPO (Per Pound Oil) though?? If using full water amount & 5%...

    What's in your canning/jarring pantry?

Your stash is beautiful! I've been wondering about the Wreck (sp?) lids. I love the glass tops on them Yes, I have both the old and new EZ Seal. Since the flats are thicker than normal metal lids, leave an additional 1/4" headspace than what the canning directions call for. Initial...

Yes, the fat around the organs is the cleanest. It's called leaf fat in hogs and suet in other animals. I always render the organ fat separate from the muscle fat (which has another name which is escaping me right now).

Welcome Vicky! Another long time (19 years) lard and talow soaper here. I also render my own from our animals. Primrose, goat & sheep tallow are Awesome!! They create a harder bar than beef tallow. Keep the heat low and render the suet without water. I use a couple electric roasters on...
