    Maybe I did put the wooden spoon in the lye. The lye is called (U do). It says caustic soda on the back. The soap is a dark tan color.

    my lye water turned brown I used a plastic pitcher and a wooden spoon but I didn't put the spoon in the water. As soon as I poured the lye in the water it turned brown instantly. Should I toss the soap? I made the soap anyway

    ARGH! Flakes of LYE in my finished soap!

    Try rebatching and putting your superfat in at trace to ensure all the lye is gone. Definately don't use flake lye anymore.

    Can someone please tell me how to measure the 5% discounted superfatted oil. When using the lye calculator it doesn't tell me how much superfatted oil to use in my recipe. Or perhaps I am not calculating properly. I really dont understand how to measure.

    Thanks alot you all are very helpful. I looked on wikapedia and it does say that caustic soda is sodium hydroxide. I have some drain opener and I heard that if it contains other than lye it will have grey or black flakes or chips in it. Does anyone know if this is true?
