Finally get to use deer tallow

I don't use salt or water when I render, as I have been using the oven. It works great. I have done lots of different things with deer tallow- from 12% up to 100%. I love it! It makes a nice hard bar that feels creamy and gentle. I have one 100% deer tallow soap that used only...

can i make my bar soaps into liquid?

The short answer is "no". You can melt some CP soaps so they are sort of liquid-y, but they won't turn into KOH liquid soaps. They are different.

    First soap-First big problem...

No, it won't clear. Superfatting liquid soap should only be done with sulfanated castor oils- no other oils will do.

    Citrus EO's and Liquid Soap

It happens to me as well- a perfectly clear liquid soap will turn milky (and stay milky) the second I add orange EO. I decided to only use citrus EOs in soaps in a dispenser that are ok when milky looking, or for shampoos. I think some oils just do this.

    Need BEER

I'm a brewer, so I make lots of beer soaps! Stout makes a dark bar (dark brown), while pale ales make a tan bar and light lagers make an off-white beer, depending what else is in them. I gel almost all of my soaps, including my beer/goat's milk soaps.

    Shea butter face cream?

One thing I love (and use on my face) is 100% whipped shea butter. It's a little greasy at first, but it does absorb fast. I'm nearly 50, but my skin isn't particularly dry. It hasn't made me break out or clog pores, but cocoa butter in any lotion or body butter does if it is on my face.

    Tallow soaps

The easiest way is to use ground fat (as it melts evenly and faster) but grinding it myself clogged up my meat grinder. If you have a better commercial grinder, try grinding the fat first. I've found the best way for me is to put the fat in a turkey roaster and put it in the oven at 300...

    Compeating with Dawn

You don't fully "neutralize" to a neutral pH. Soap is still basic- but adding the borax makes it less basic since borax has a lower pH than KOH. You may take the liquid soap from a pH of say, 12 to 9.8 which is safe and is called "neutralizing" as then it isn't lye heavy. That's an...

    Can I gel beer soap?

I also gel all my beer soaps. One thing that my husband loves is the "homemade" aspect. I'm a homebrewer, and I recently made a 100% tallow (that I hand rendered from a grass-fed side of beef we bought) and 100% homebrew for the liquid. I used an oatmeal stout, condensed it down by boiling...

    Glycerine soapmaking video

I used olive oil that I had from my salad dressing making- good quality extra virgin olive oil. I do buy it cheaper online than at the store, but it's not cheap. I've used pomace for other soaps, but not this one. I buy many of my oils online, including my coconut oil. We don't have...

    Goats Milk SOap HELP!

As the others mentioned, any soap recipe can be used. You can just substitute goat's milk in place of the water. For an ivory soap using goat's milk, I freeze my goat's milk. Then I add the lye to the frozen goat's milk, stirring well. It will be slushy until it tries to warm up. I do...

It seems a bit thinner, but I may have mismeasured the water when I added it. It came out very nice, actually, and this morning my husband used it for shampoo. It didn't lather well but he really liked it anyway. When I used it with a body pouf, the lather was nice. I have some at the...

    Goats Milk SOap HELP!

I freeze my goat milk before using, and mix the lye with the frozen goat's milk. I soap at a cool temperature, but let it gel at cool room temperatures. The soap comes out ivory colored, instead of white, but it's pretty and it doesn't have any partial gel issues.

    Glycerine soapmaking video

They are- but I wrote it down also! It was: glycerine 6 ounces KOH 3 ounces OO 13 ounces CO 1.5 ounces Castor oil 1.5 ounces Then the water added was three times the finished paste weight. My paste weighed 24 ounces. So the water I added was 72 ounces, which seemed like a lot...

    Determining dilution rates for LS

Yes, I understand what you're saying, thanks! The "dilution rate" still doesn't make sense to me, though- as she says it's "paste" dilution, which of course would include any water used from the beginning. I think the easiest way for me to do this is to add water 1:1. Let it dissolve...

    Water Discounting Advice?

All of them. A 50% olive oil soap needs MORE than 6 weeks, and 6 weeks would be the absolute bare minimum to use it. Some soaps can be "ready" faster, but olive oil soaps go from a relatively soft soap to a soap that can pound nails with aging! Not just that, but the lather is richer...

    Determining dilution rates for LS

Ah, ok. Well, back to more dumb questions. When I make the paste, it's so thick that a spoon will stand up in it. Not only that, a spoon can get stuck in it! So I have this assumption that much of the water has been steamed/boiled off. That's why we weigh the paste. So, at that point if I...

    Determining dilution rates for LS

I have Catherine Failor's book, and while I'm not stupid (I hope!) I'm having trouble guessing the dilution rates recommended and how much that actually is. For example, her chart has "percent actual soap" and "water added per pound of paste". At 30 percent, she has 16 ounces (1 pound) of...

    Glycerine soapmaking video

Thank you both! It was the second one, but there is lots of good information in the one Hazel posted too. Thanks so much!

    Glycerine soapmaking video

I know it's in this forum- and I can't find it! In a thread, someone posted the link to the video on the "how to" with the glycerine method. I loved the video, and am ready to make the soap. But now, even with a "search" of this forum, I can't find it again. (That's so frustrating- why...
