    First hot process

My husband brought home a big fat deer last night, and so today when he skinned it I asked him for much of the fat. He brought in suet (around kidneys) as well as tallow. Since I was rendering the tallow, I decided to do my first HP. I used a proven recipe of my own: Deer tallow: 45%...

    Aloe Cream Lard Soap

Sounds really great, and it looks great as well!

    Dental soap

After thinking about this, I grabbed a small bar of baby soap that is over a year old. It's 95% OO, 5% castor oil, no fragrance or additives. It was ok, and my teeth felt really clean after using it but my husband didn't love it. He felt he needed something minty to feel his "mouth wake...

    Dental soap

I'm going to try this. Without any sweetener at all, I imagine it's "soapy" tasting and I have visions of my mother washing my mouth out with soap. :wtf: So, I want to try a tiny batch (one bar, say) and use 90% OO and 10% cocoa butter. A tiny bit of peppermint and/or cinnamon EOs? Would...

Would like comments about my website

The only thing I would add is that the ingredient's page has some claims that may be considered medicinal and so not allowed. I don't know about canada's laws, but claiming that goat's milk reduces wrinkles and helps with ezcema and psoriasis. and that olive oil stimulates the growth of new...

    Moisturiser recipe needed

I've made some lotions and creams, with good results- but I just wanted to throw out there my all-time favorite moisturizer. Believe it or not- simply whipping a little shea butter with a mixer. That's it! I have superdry skin, and the shea butter, once whipped, spreads on and sinks right...

    Help!

I wonder about the jojoba. I never think of it as an oil that will saponify, and 25% of it is a LOT. I think that is the root of the problem.

    Bartender's Hand Balm

This is probably quite a bit different than you're describing, but your friends with chapped hands (and heels, and feet, etc) would probably love this one that I make! I call it "my salve" and I've used it on minor scars, chapped hands, even my face, but it started out as a rich cuticle...

Going back to Pomace Olive Oil

I buy my pomace oil at GFS. I really like it- the price, and the color, and the smell. I prefer it for most of my soaps over EVOO. It still makes a super gentle soap, but without so much of the "olive oil" smell and color.

    CPOP soap oil separating??

I've only done CPOP a few times- because it overheated and separated! The last batch overheated so badly that I had to rebatch it. If you want to force gel by CPOP, maybe do what I learned, and preheat the oven to 170 and then turn it off, and put the new soap in there. It will still force...

    New to hot process

Thank you for the tips! I had not seen those links, and that will help alot. I don't ever sell soap- I give lots of it away, though. So I don't care so much about the "rustic" appearance. Well, I don't think I do, but I'll have to decide when I see it. My house is cold in the winter...

    New to hot process

I've been CP soaping for years. I've been very happy with the results. I've only done hot process twice- once for liquid soap, and once for a rebatch. (Only one rebatch due to overheated soap- ever!) Anyway, I have some recipes I love but I understand that if I HP the same recipes, I can...

soap still soft after 7 wks

The recipe looks rock hard. How much lye did you use? (The amount of superfat). What size batch?

Goat milk soap thickens too fast

Once you are at thin trace, there is no reason to continue stick blending (making a thick trace). Stop then, and don't warm it up and don't stick blend it then either. Once you're at thin trace, that's good! At a thin trace, do your swirls and things, and then when finished put the mold...

    Goat Milk Products

It says "goat's milk glyercin soap". It's a premade soap base that you can just melt and put it molds. There are those who do "melt and pour" soaps, but CP soap is made out of oil and lye. Then, additions (like goat's milk) can be added to it. We don't start with soap to make soap- we start...

    Ok now I'm mad...lol

I use 100% vegetable glycerin for my liquid soap (and other things). I've never had it not work for me. I'm at a loss. If you heat the glycerin to nearly boiling, the KOH has to dissolve. It has to- as far as I know. Where did the KOH come from? could it be questionable?

Finally get to use deer tallow

I've never used a butcher for deer, but I assume that can easily save the fat for your. I had one deer last year (a buck) that had very little fat on him, but if you get a nice fat doe you will have some fat to work with. If it's at the butcher's anyway, have him grind the fat for you. It...

the "oldest" hand-made soap you have kept/used?

I have just dug into a soap drawer that I forgot about, and the soaps in there are between 3 and 4 years old. They are all just fine, and the only issue with one is that I used paprika for a color swirl in one and it's now a little scratchy. It would be a great exfoliating soap, but would be...

Finally get to use deer tallow

For oven rendering, I just chop up the tallow a bit. It melts better if you can grind it, but my meat grinder clogs badly with tallow, so I chop it up into smaller pieces. I stick it in the oven at 300 and then check on it every once in a while. I use an old fashioned potato masher to...

    Coffee soap

I use beer or wine to make soap. It's fine, but you want to de-carbonate it. I just pour the beer into a saucepot and bring it to a boil. That condenses it, decarbonates it, and also boils off the alcohol. I've done it with flat beer, without boiling as well, at it worked out fine. I've...
