First attempts at HP - Silver Fox Soap

Lee, you are making me want to make shaving soap- and I don't know a single person who shaves their face with anything but a cheap electric razor, and even not very often at that........... You are contributing to my obsession!

    Rendered tallow from wild animals?

Yes. Deer tallow makes an awesome ingredient for soap. The thing is, many wild game animals don't have a ton of fat on them. We're lucky enough that some of our deer come from the edges of farms, so they have quite a bit of fat on them at this time of year. I've posted recipes on this...

    Size of Soap?

I don't sell, so this is a different ballgame for me. But I'm pretty small, with small hands, and I hate using a huge bar of soap. So my soaps are "my hand size"- that is, rectangular and fitting in my hand. Generally, a loaf pan about 1/2 full and cut about 1/2" or so think fits my small...

    Goat/cow milk soap. Need help.

That's what I do. Freeze the milk, add the lye, stir well, and keep it in a bowl of ice water. Then I mix the soap, again over the bowl of ice water, and pour into a loaf mold. My milk soaps are a creamy light ivory color. But I don't use fragrance oils that can discolor.

    Vegan Alternative

No, not really. The numbers will be close, but tallow is so very creamy that just making the numbers the same doesn't mean the soap will be at all similar. What do you have so far?

Anybody make 4 or 5 lb recipes?

I have some stainless pots that are perfect. Tall, but not too tall, and not wide.

    Hand cream/ salve help

I can't find my notes and recipes on the salves I've made (and loved!!!) but they started very similar to this: http://adelightfulhome.com/how-to-make-calendula-salve-and-why-you-should/ I used enough beeswax to thicken, but not so much that the consistency was waxy. It had the consistency...

    Making Deodorant

I don't have sensitive skin at all, and mine was coconut oil, baking soda, a bit of cornstarch, and EOs. I live in a cool/cold climate so it stayed firm in the push up container, but for a warmer climate some shea butter or cocoa butter would work for firmness. I've read of arrowroot powder...

    curing soap is wet

My climate is usually pretty dry, even in the summer. It's very dry in the winter, as even the snow feels dry and doesn't stick together. This summer, for the first three weeks of August it's been humid. My aged soaps that I just keep in the open in one of the bedrooms are a bit moist...

    Acne bar advice

I'm a homebrewer and winemaker, and the forum is on homebrewing. I don't have much time for many other forums, so this one is the only other one I spend any time on at all. The nice thing is being able to use whatever beer or wine I want in a recipe- I have a seemingly endless supply!

    Acne bar advice

I'm no expert on acne soaps at all, but how does he do with your regular soap? The first thing I thought of was a pine tar soap, although I've never used one. It's supposed to be great for skin conditions, and that may be just the ticket. Since I've never made a pine tar soap, I can't...

    colloidal oatmeal and coconut milk

No. Just stir it in with the oils, or mix it in with the batch of soap.

    Great recipe for tallow/lard!

I did, but just with orange EO. That was mostly just to use it up. I like to use a little peppermint EO normally- it's like chocolate (which doesn't have a scent) seems to go so well with peppermint that you can almost smell "choco-mint" from it in your imagination. But it can be irritating...

    Crinkle cutter?

I almost always use a crinkle cutter- BUT......I don't use colorants (except for cocoa powder that I might swirl for some interest) or anything in my soap and I don't sell. I just do it because it provides a nice grip for my hands in the shower!

Tell me about Salt bars...why great?

Forgot the photo! This is a very small batch- four bars: (bad picture, taken with my phone, but you get the idea): The soap on the left is a deer tallow/coconut milk soap I made today as well. The salt soap on the right is BRIGHT white, while the white of the chocolate swirl soap is pretty...

Tell me about Salt bars...why great?

It might be the white sea salt as well- the batter was white, but once I added the salt it was WHITE. Even during and after gel, and cutting, it remained that way. It's not streaky or anything- just bright white.

Tell me about Salt bars...why great?

My salt bars are stark white as well. For one I did 100% CO with 20% SF. For another, I did 80% CO, 10% Castor oil, 10% sweet almond oil. I varied the salt from 50% in the first to 35% in the second, using white fine ground sea salt. Maybe a colored salt would have given some color, but...

Please help me to explain to people why FO is used instead of EO

Maybe consider offering your friends/family unscented versions? I know it's strange at first, because everything is scented usually, but I have found that I LOVE the smell of unscented soap. I make beer soap as well as milk soaps and regular soaps, and they are pretty darn nice unscented...

Please help me to explain to people why FO is used instead of EO

I think I was misquoted. I didn't say that none of them stick. I said: They should also know that EOs don't "stick" as well as most FOs and they should then make the choice. With CP particularly, many EOs don't tend to stick as well as FOs. Some of those EOs you listed are not great safe...

    Great recipe for tallow/lard!

Yes, adding the CM when it's slushy does help although I still gel the soap! I haven't tried this particular recipe with powdered CM, but I'm sure it would work if it was a full-fat powdered CM. I like both beef tallow and deer tallow (and lard) soaps and I'm finding it similar to the...
