I have to be honest, my iron collects more dust than I have actually used it. Back in the days of curling irons, I would clean it with a wet rag when it was at the highest setting and would be the same way I would clean an iron if I actually used one. As far as preventing it, I have no clue.

If you aren't opposed to stamping after, you could always try cookie cutters made for fondant. Looks like they might just fit perfectly on that size bar.
