I’m also a knitter as well making soaps and shampoos. I used shampoo to wash woolens for years. While Dawn is a great product for many uses, I’m thinking that it would strip the wool of lanolin and dry it out, reducing the benefits of wool being wool over time. Since learning more about the care...
@KiwiMoose famous soap with RBO? Where do I find this recipe, please? I was so thrilled with @Zany_in_CO ’s NSCS I’ve decided to quit digging through my books and start using recipes from the real experts.
Dear @Saltynuts,
I researched soap recipes and techniques for nearly two years, and took an in person soap making workshop before attempting my first batch using a kit and tutorial. The Soap Elders here are a wealth of information, but that in no way reduces your responsibility to do your own...
My opinion on the use of organic oils varies just a bit from the excellent information provided by @The Efficacious Gentleman and @earlene. I use organic oils whenever available in order to use my money to support more sustainable and less damaging farming practices, because this is a value...
@AliOop here is the "butter" recipe: How to Make Vegan Butter - Regular Vegan Butter - Coconut Oil Base
And here is a yummy cream cheese frosting recipe: How to Make Vegan Cream Cheese Frosting
I'm happy to be the resident vegan resource! I do remember eating eggs cooked in bacon grease and I...
I’m a big fan of soap bags for the bits and pieces of leftover soap. I make them out of washcloths, sisal, or hand knitted. They can probably be purchased, but where’s the fun in that? For gifts, the bags make a nice wrapping.
If only I had known! I make my own vegan butter and cream cheese which cost sooo much less than store bought And the taste is very good. I could squish some through the interwebs for you!
Does using coconut oil to make vegan butter count as non soapy use of soapy stuff?
Ah...dry hair. I usually use a serum with Jojoba, Argan, and vetiver. I think I will add meadow foam seed oil to my next batch. Then switch I it up with the kokum butter hair recipe @violets2217 linked earlier in this thread. I often glob in some oils/butter and then braid it. My hair doesn't...
The recipe you need will depend upon the type of hair you have and what goals you have for making your own bars. I researched the topic for close to six months before making my first bars. Humblebee & Me - Humblebee & Me has some excellent recipes if you your hair is mostly straight. Curly hair...
A few weeks in and my hair is doing well with shampoo and conditioner bars recipes from DIY BATH AND BODY. My hair is still on the dry side, but that might be because the humidity here is running around 20%. I’m going to try the hot pour shampoo next time. Sandra and Angie were very helpful with...
I was just reading up elsewhere and realized that I should have used the FSW to make my seaweed soap. Look at me learning stuff! I will start using the FSW everywhere and track down @AliOop!
It will harden up without doubt. Rebatching would make things only worse. But it's an interesting “mistake” in any case. As long as you have the correct amount of NaOH, it'll be safe soap. You've added too much water more water than in Zany's canonical recipe. Nothing wrong with that, except you...
Well, Zany.. your NSCS is not fool proof! I made my first batch yesterday and unmolded today about 24 hours later. The soap is very soft. I realized late last night that I failed to change the default lye water ratio from 2:1 to 1.7:1. Maybe it will firm up someday? Or maybe I should rebatch? It...
My Brambleberry soap calculator just crashed and lost the last six years of recipes and batches. Not as bad as it could be since I make soap for only family and friends. Is there a tutorial for soap friend calc? A favorite calc? I read the thread regarding calcs but I’m still unclear on the the...
