    Tussah silk + master/batched lye

thank you Linne - I'm going to steam ahead on my own sums, but I'd be very curious to know if I'm in line with general practice!!!

Adding silk at .11 per cent of the weight of the batch of soap

Thanks shunt. I've come to the conclusion that I need to add 1gm of silk per 250g of lye solution. This is working back from advice I was given to add 1gm of lye for a 2-pound batch of SOAP. I haven't seen a cotton ball in a long time and I don't know if that's scrunched up and compact or...

    Tussah silk + master/batched lye

So, by my calculations, I should add .4% of the weight of the masterbatch lye in silk. For let's say 250 gms of masterbatch lye should add 1gm of silk. I THINK!!!

    Tussah silk + master/batched lye

oh dear, dear!!! the pinches, the peas, the cotton balls and now the inches!!! :p Thanks Linne. I was wondering about the "pea-sized" guidelines I've seen. I wonder do they scrunch it up into a pea?!!! Anyway, I am convinced that somebody out there must have wondered about this. The most precise...

    Tussah silk + master/batched lye

Hi all, several participants in this thread add silk to their masterbatch lye. Some, I have seen, eyeball it. Has anyone come up with a calculation of silk weight per masterbatch lye weight?! I just put up a separate post on this, but perhaps the people most likely to know are the people in this...

Adding silk at .11 per cent of the weight of the batch of soap

Hi all, I am actually hoping to add silk to my masterbatch lye. Most people seem to eyeball the amount of silk they add. From what I can work out, the standard amount in weight is .11 per cent of the weight of the total batch of soap. If that is accurate, I can calculate in reverse what weight...

Dual lye, citric acid and sugar

Hi! well, ahem. The KOH didn't reach a very high temperature (early 30s C) when I added it to the water. Perhaps I added the silk into the mix too soon. It (the KOH) melted very quickly but I despaired of it melting the silk so I added the KOH lye solution to the sugar solution hoping to bring...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

oulala! I had just rectified a masterbatch bearing in mind this palmitic acid business (lots of sums!!!), and now with this new soya wax information, I discover that I'll have to add in a pretty major amount of cacao butter to get the stearic up and meet Deeanna's criteria. More sums! and I'll...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

wow Earlene, prompted by your remark, I got on to Latitude nature for the info. How right you were!!! FAR LESS STEARIC than what the calculator was giving me...!!! Thank you for pointing that out... I'd seen the discussion on that subject but zapped it apparently. THANK YOU So is for SOGWAX40...

Dual lye, citric acid and sugar

I am going to answer my own question in case anyone does the same search: "How should I add citric acid to my soap? Dissolve citric acid powder in about 2 times its weight of water. Stick blend the citric acid mixture into the oils." source: Citric acid, Citrus juice | Soapy Stuff

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Dawni, I don't know how you are reading through it as you have to request the detailed breakdown!!! I've sent a message requesting the specs! Yes, the site is wild, no?!!! Thanks Soapsisters!!!

Dual lye, citric acid and sugar

Just before I do something mad, I think I should just check. I've searched and can't find this info. I have always used NaOH and I add sugar and citric (and make the relevant adjustments, or to be more truthful soapmakingfriend does them for me). I want to experiment with a dual lye (95% NaOH...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Hi Earlene, yes, I read through ALL those soya wax discussions! I buy mine from Latitude nature (France). I suspect it may be the same supplier as Soapsisters mentions: I seem to remember mention of a German source. It's 100% soya, European sourced and so no OGM. They are candle suppliers more...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Yes Dawni, they are up there! I actually like tinkering around in my own groove!!! However, just for the discussion, I think this needs to be said. Olive oil has a bad rap with some soapers on this forum as I've seen, but OO does have a good palmitic contribution to make. And my suspicion is...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Did you not Dawni?!! Because I just looked at your vegan recipes on the calculator and I see that your palmitic and stearic are always neck and neck and you flirt with the limits on linoleic also. So if you are happy with those recipes that's further evidence in favour of the theory...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Yes, I was completely off-track. I had (SOAP B) Lauric 8/myristic 3/ Palmitic 5/ Stearic 21, Oleic 45/ Linoleic 4. (that was SFH0 38%/Shea 25%; Coco 17, Castor 10 and Soy 10. Aloe juice instead of water, sugar 5% and CA 3%. I was hoping they would compensate for the low coco in bubbles! This...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Hi Kiwimoose, you beat me to it! I just entered your figures. Your stearic is double your palmitic, as mine was. I have been masterbatching my lye 50/50 with aloe instead of water. I've had no problems except that I'm now going to use the double bucket method Deeanna describes on Youtube. My...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

Dear Dawni, I salute you on this wonderful day! and thank you so much!! I can hardly believe you got those numbers up!!! I thought that all fiddling possible had been done!!! And I just ordered RBO from Crudigno Organic Oils. THANK YOU!!! And Dawni, this will be a leap of faith for me because...

The (overly) Cartesian Soaper: Palmitic vs Stearic Question

thanks a million, Szaza, I think I'll experiment with the avocado - refined for colour reasons - through The Soapery (sacrificing my organic at least provisionally). Do you not use The Soapery? It's only like 5,49 or something for shipping. I stay with my French supplier for the non-OGM European...
