Lye Solutions, Concentrations, Dilutions, and Ratios

Maybe some of y’all saw that I posted a couple of my soaps this morning, mentioning some issues I had with the soap volcano-ing on me. I ended up also posting the soap within a Facebook group for the fragrance oil company from where I bought the oils. I used a fragrance oil called Cocoa Butter...

    Campfire S’mores goat milk soap

With notes of vanilla, amber, sugar, sandalwood, cedar, and clove, this soap smells like the perfect campfire marshmallow. Whether cuddled under the stars with someone you love or popping mallows in the microwave with your kids, this soap will make you feel like you’re camping and roasting...

    Fall/Winter

I cut soap yesterday, and now it’s curing. I’ve been working on my fall/winter collection. I am fairly disappointed with how two of the soaps turned out. The first one was supposed to turn out differently in my head, and it also got way too hot and started to spill over the top of the soap. It...

    French Pink Clay

After some research for using indigo powder myself, I’ve learned that indigo must be dispersed in oil for it to work best. When I’ve added it to water, it didn’t color things as well. And I had the same thing happen to me with it turning green before I realized I needed to buy processed indigo...

    Fall/Winter

I’ve been soaping every Saturday, and I have a plan to get all my fall/winter scents ready for use/sale by September 17. There will be 2-3 new scents every couple of weeks, with fall scents becoming available in August, with holiday scents ready mid-September. Want to get ahead of the holiday...

    Lighter colour soft oils?

If it helps, when I soap, even before I put the goat milk in, my melted oils look pretty yellow. I have a few different recipes, and I use mixes of castor, coconut, mango butter, kokum butter, cocoa butter, sweet almond, olive, beeswax, palm, lard, and chicken eggs, and I’m realizing now that...

    Lighter colour soft oils?

As far as fatty acids go, castor oil is the only oil that contains ricinoleic acid (and at about 90%). It’s an oil in a class all by itself, and I love it in soap. Castor oil is hydroscopic, which means it draws in moisture. It stabilizes lather, and it helps other oils high in myristic and...

    Best eucalyptus mint FO?

Overall, my favorite fragrance oil company is Midwest Fragrance Company. I have tried several of their oils, and they all behave beautifully in CP soap. Customers of theirs use the oils for soaps, candles, wax melts, bath bombs, body butters, etc… They don’t discolor (which the exception of the...

Any tips for green natural colorants to use?

I’ve been using spirulina for a while and haven’t noticed any major issues with fading. Most of my colors tend to darken over time as the soap cures. And even if it did lighten, I’d rather use that than micas. Haven’t seen an issue with indigo thus far, and I list it on the ingredients. Indigo...

Any tips for green natural colorants to use?

This is a goat milk soap I made several weeks ago, and the green color has not faded. The green color was made with French green clay and spirulina powder. I dispersed the colors in oil. The goat milk soap has a yellow/cream color, so I have to be careful with colors when I add them and really...

    SMF June 2022 Un-Challenge - Cocoa Powder

I made a cocoa powder soap the other day, and inspired by May’s challenge, I chose to try my hand at an infinity swirl. It was my first-ever attempt at both cocoa and the infinity swirl. Next time I try this particular swirl, I will pour the soap when it reaches emulsion, or light trace at the...

    Calling me Hun

As a Southerner, I can say that “Bless your heart” is not always passive aggressive. That is probably the one that’s most often thought of when that phrase comes to mind, but it’s not always the intended meaning. Though Southerners do have the “art” of saying something ugly in a sweet way...

    Calling me Hun

I live in North Alabama, where we have missile defense, NASA, military, etc… Our city’s nickname is “Rocket City,” and it’s an engineering town, as we like to call it. That is great for a lot of things; it brings in a lot of people from everywhere. Lately, we have been getting a lot of people...

    Calling me Hun

Have any of y’all just recently moved to the South (as in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc…)? We call everyone honey, baby, love, sweetie, sugar, etc… down here. To anyone and everyone, friends and strangers, alike. It’s just part of the culture. We do also say ma’am and sir, and...

Looking for a great Freesia FO

BB had been having trouble with their website for a couple of weeks now, then. Their payment buttons didn’t work, and even when I tried to submit the order twice, I got an error message both times. The error message said to call customer service got help, but they never answered the three times...

SMF April 2022 Soap Challenge - Straight Line design

Thank you. The color next to the green is a dark pink. I used French pink clay for that color, and for the lighter pink at the top it’s the same French pink clay with titanium dioxide. Maybe it’s just the lighting that’s making it look brown? But it’s meant to be a dark pink.

SMF April 2022 Soap Challenge - Straight Line design

While I’m not eligible for entering my soap into the April challenge (since I don’t yet have 50 posts under my belt), I still enjoyed trying out this challenge, just for my own learning and fun. I’d really intended the lines to be perfectly straight, but I made egg and goat milk soap, and the...
