    Just found Grandmother's soap recipe

I don’t think it would change the recipe much to leave out the Oil of Sasafras. Personally, given what we now know, I’d leave it out. I use less than 2-3% SF in all my soap. I measure carefully but even at 0% SF there is a margin of error because NaOH is not 100% pure. So it will always be...

Is a gastronome so they will be stainless steel trays and supports. Stainless steel is generally inert to soap.

The Importance of a Sniffy Spot

I wrap my soap in Decorative paper. I have a sample out the front in real cellophane that you can smell the scent through. I’ve got a sticker with “display only” on the cellphone soap which I swap with each batch to make sure the soap in the display one is identical to the wrapped soap and...

    Broadspectrum preservative for cp soap.

I used to make pumpkin soap (for colour and properties). It was great. I still make oatmeal (Very very finely ground by me but not quite colloidal) and honey soap with oat milk. It’s one of my best sellers. Lots of people put avocado in soap for colour. it’s not too dissimilar from using...

    Total soap newb

Don't throw it away. Give it a 8 - 12 week cure time and see how it goes. Fabulous that you have found a solution to your problem. Best to buy the 76* Coconut oil and use the fractionated stuff for cooking or for your skin. Good luck next time. I've been soaping for 5 years and I am a...

    Curing rack ideas

I would absolutely love one of those but they are phenomenally expensive here, even second hand. Also I'd prefer holes in the trays for good ventilation. (Which could easily be overcome if a good fairly donated a rack to me!) We have high humidity here, especially in summer, and need all the...

    Coronavirus

It has been a very daunting time for everyone. The vaccine will protect you. There is a greatly reduced possibility of contracting the virus once vaccinated and if by some slim chance you do contract it your body will start fighting the invader immediately and you might not get symptoms, even...

A wish for consistency of UNITS! Is it only me?

I like to know that my recipe turns out to be the exact SF that I specify and that each recipe is exactly the same - down to the colourant. Far too pedantic for a lot of soapers. I do everything in grams and mm - except for heights of people. I know that I am 1680mm but I can't tell you...

    Car maintenance DIY

I think something will be invented that makes batteries as we Know them totally obsolete. Maybe hydrogen power or something totally out there. It won’t be until we get away from fossil fuels that we’ll spend time and money on there totally different ideas through necessity. They say if you...

    What is it?

The “rivers” part tends to shrink at a different rate to the rest of the soap as it cures so it can look unsightly.

A wish for consistency of UNITS! Is it only me?

Being a micro manager I’ve weighed all my additives (Citric acid, salt, Clay, AC etc) on a jewellers scale a number of times and I know what a level 1/4 tsp, 1/2 tsp or 1 tsp or each additive weighs. It’s easier to then use those measurements. if I’m doing a 3 colour (1 plain and 2 colours)...

Yes you are right gecko. Always check the safe usage rates. I’m allergic to most EOs so don’t use them but I should have put that warning in.

I’m really slow at typing messages and edit a lot so you have to give me time to respond fully. Go back and read my message now that I’ve finished and see if some of your questions are answered. I cover all my soaps too but I know how my recipes react. Soaping temperature is the temperature...

    Total soap newb

Yes of course we can help you. Welcome to the forum. What temperature did you soap at? Did you stick blend it? Did you cover it? Did you add other ingredients? Cracking is generally a sign over over heating which can be caused by sugar, honey or a few other factors like high coconut soaps. I...

Rosemary oleoresin extract, vitamin e, vitamin C and anything else ?things to keep bars from going rancid.

Yes it should increase the shelf life. Also refrigerate it. Hemp oil has a 6 month shelf life. Unfortunately, you don’t know how long it’s been sitting in the shop (despite the expiry date). It’s one oil I just don’t bother with.

    Infusion

Adding it to lye does mean you can use a little less than just making a slurry with the powder. But, following the directions on the link I gave before and using Thiourea Dioxide and aerating it (I use a fish tank aerator pump for 30 mins) turns the indigo green. The oxydised indigo goes a lot...

    Post your Gripe

My sister's husband died then her cat died and she bought a dog to keep her company. I told her a puppy was like a baby and a kitten is like a teenager. After she'd had the puppy for 4 weeks she admitted I was right, admitted she wasn't a dog person and gave it away. She feels free again. She...
