Need help in making the ULTIMATE BAR SOAP

I found the Melt and Pour soap from Michaels to be drying on my skin. Prior to learning how to make soap, I used a melt and pour from Stephenson's and liked it better. But even my first batch of soap made primarily from OO and CO and that I hadn't cured, was better on my skin than either of the...

Soap tips for those with “mature skin”

I'm 81 and live in the high desert area. My soaps vary in percentages of lard, RBO sweet almond and cocoa butter (I bought a big bag and need to put it in everything I make these days) and maybe 5% CO if I want a little bit more bubbles. I play around with the percentages depending on what I...

Need help in making the ULTIMATE BAR SOAP

I was in Alaska when my skin started to itch, flake like mad and require tons of lotion just to get my clothes on. It's very dry there in the winter...which started mid Sept and we didn't get rain until May. I tried all kinds of soap....Dove was a total joke....nothing worked. We retired and...

    Maui Wildfires

Thanks for your personal information about your daughter and the update. Mine lives on the Big Island and have had some scares with the volcano and a couple of hurricanes. Like your family, they could leave but prefer to stay and help those who need it. Blessings to yours. Help is needed, and...

    Never made soap...yet

Yep, I started with someone else's recipe and didn't use the soap calculator and lived to tell the tale. But once I found this site I learned to use the calculator and also so much more. I no longer use those two recipes, but it has more to do with my aging skin than anything else. Keep a...

Reusing Glass Soap Making Dishes for Food?

Before I found out that pyrex was a no-no for mixing lye solution, I noticed that my numbers and letters on my measuring cup were disappearing....which is why I started a search on using pyrex to find out it was bad to do. Still use the pyrex for cooking but since there is no markings any longer...

    Soap scent could attract mosquitoes

Thanks for the article...I will have to dig deeper into it once I get my new reading glasses! Talk about a sleeper! Chemistry was not my best subject at any point in my life. It was interesting that the paper mentioned the presence of eucalyptol was present in the person least bit by mosquitos...

    Soap scent could attract mosquitoes

Well, I have some dragon's blood so maybe I"ll try it. Not sure what blood has to do with it, as B+ gets mixed reviews at this house. LOL

    Soap scent could attract mosquitoes

@glendam I thought a study with four people wasn't much of a study to establish their theory. Years ago I read a larger study...have no idea where...that said it was blood type. But that study was easily disproved in our family as all of us are B +. One of my daughters and I get chomped on...

    Soap Hardness

I made one batch of 100% coconut soap with 20% superfat. It was awful on my skin (the old type). The only one in my family that liked it was my grandson, but he still said he preferred my lard and CO better. It also laid a huge amount of scum on the tiles in my shower. Never made it again.

    Eager to become a pro!

A few years back I ground lavender buds into a fine powder....similar to cocoa powder. I used no scent at all, hoping that the powder scent would come through. No such luck. When I cut the bars every one of them had a creamy center with a grayish brown "skin" on the outside. A few days later the...

    Having fun with Hot Process!

That is interesting to note about white wine vinegar. I have never tried vinegar in my soaps, but I will make a note "to self" to not sub the wine vinegar for regular. I love your soaps. Personally, almost all of my favorite FO's turn my soaps dark tan to brown. I've not only embraced the brown...

Help me solve a sensitivity mystery

FYI My daughter used to end up with infections similar to yeast ones and her OB-GYN doctor ask her if she was washing her ******l area with soap. And she was. The doc told her that you don't have to use anything but water in that area to clean it. It needs to be washed but does not need soap or...

    Christmas 2022

It's warmed up to 28 degrees this morning. I'm still in a Bah Humbug mood and hubby is trying his best to coax me out of it. Yes I know that it is -40 degrees in our old home in Alaska and I do thank my lucky stars that we are no longer there! BUT someone on here posted that wonderful beach...

Can an FO affect skin feel?

Never underestimate the power of a little wine! Don't ask how I know. Almost all of my favorite FO's turn brown, but I've never had any of them add color to my soap dish. Only with color or charcoal powder have I had my soaps run or bleed into a washcloth. I have totally embraced the brown or...

I will NOT buy any new fragrance oils!

OMG! You ladies are hilarious! And most of you need help! LOL but I won't enable any of you in your quest for more! Soaping is my second hobby so it doesn't get the attention that quilting does at my house. You all would think I'm a piker if you saw my storage area for soap. I used to have one...

Soap is drying during the winter

When I talk about commercial soaps, I'm really talking about the detergent bars that pass as soap. I was given a bar of real soap by a friend who makes her own. That was what started my quest on making my own soaps...and then discovering after a while that something was making my skin itch...
