    Instantaneous Hardening!

😂 @ undercover soap makers. I don’t see it as rude to try to warn someone they’ll be breaking a law, I see that as helpful.

    Instantaneous Hardening!

It’s difficult for me to understand what you are writing. Here when you say “Hardened in five seconds, foamed up like it was sodium lactate (none was used this time)” Do you mean firmed or foamed? Sodium lactate helps my soap firm up over the course of 8-12 hours but it has never caused my...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Wow! That’s a lot of humidity! I learned about chemical dehumidifiers when we sold a home (ironically that house was built circa 1940s (if not earlier) era too)! The basement had an old well closet from before city water was connected in the 1940s/50s). Our real estate agent took one...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I think there chemical based de-humidifiers you can buy at hardware stores that may help in small enclosed spaces (like a closet).

Brambleberry favorite fragrance oils for CP soap

As @AliOop predicted ~1 week later energy has mellowed out to a much more pleasant scent without the chemical offness it has (for me) straight out of the bottle and right after using it in soap (even more chemically). I used it as ~5% oil weight - so much higher than the guidelines. But it...

How do we feel about canola (rapeseed) oil?

I recently tried this and it did not turn out well to pull from my base oils. Maybe because my batches are so small, and my liquid oils a small percentage, but I ended up with a mess where I needed to combine the colors all back together. I was going for raspberry pink/rose clay with orange...

How do we feel about canola (rapeseed) oil?

Adding another screenshot from the oleico bottle because I thought this was an interesting chart considering the fatty acid discussions we have about base oils for soap. Now I see why people like avocado oil!

How do we feel about canola (rapeseed) oil?

Brambleberry has a high oleic canola oil that is one of their cheaper oils. This is a grocery brand of high oleic safflower oil that was recently on sale (~4/lb). It has vitamin E added to it already. Since I’m at the very beginning learning stage I’m not buying in bulk so $4/pound is about...

    Recipe critique?

Just updating that the soap has finally hardened and the whites are so white they are bordering on translucent. Orange color is still there. Orange scent has faded but comes back strong with using the soap in hot water.

How do we feel about canola (rapeseed) oil?

@KiwiMoose After all that controversy, lol? I bought some high oleic canola oil too just to see if it was similar to HO safflower oil. At first I was so confused reading your responses because it was out of character for you and nothing in the thread currently matched your responses! Then I...

Spectrum shortening (100% hydrogenated palm oil) - experiences?

So - does palm oil move speed up trace compared to part tallow-lard-soy shortening? This went from liquid to thick goopy custard quickly.

    CP soap gained weight!

How much weight is your soap gaining per day?

Spectrum shortening (100% hydrogenated palm oil) - experiences?

Y’all are correct. Spectrum does not hydrogenyze their palm oil. My mistake. I found it at my grocery store. Is $12 for 24 Oz pricey? It seems pricey!

Spectrum shortening (100% hydrogenated palm oil) - experiences?

I’m thinking of trying spectrum 100% hydrogenated palm oil instead of Walmart shortening (even though Walmart product is 1/3 the price)- mainly because I don’t trust Walmart to not change their shortening in the future. I’d really appreciate reading any experiences with this product or...

What soapy thing have you done today?

That is my general impression with safflower oil (which I think is similar).

    Confusion regarding MHRA

As you pointed out ginger in soap wouldn’t help nausea since they would not eat the soap so that right there comes off more deceptive than silly to me (personally). …. Also (not sure what ginger essence is precisely) ginger is not something you’d want anywhere near sensitive parts of your body...

    Adding sugar to lye solution

This time I dissolved the sugar in hot water first then used that water to make the lye solution. After the solution cooled and I added sodium lactate - something precipitated out again. It was not clumps this time - it was more goo like (still strained it). Was this lye lint?

    Reading pH strip tests

ph strips are notoriously inaccurate. If you’re using them to test for ph of a product (eg testing ph for preservative) I would not trust them. That said you use the first color.

Reusing Glass Soap Making Dishes for Food?

It’s fine. Lye will not incorporate into your glass dish and leach back out over time. Im sure you’ve washed the dish -any lye that was there is long gone. Honestly - you add enough water to bring down the ph it’s no longer dangerous.

Brambleberry favorite fragrance oils for CP soap

I used milk and honey. I know it’s confusing, lol! Milk and honey must have a higher usage rate and is also 4% vanillin so that makes me more suspicious it’s the one turning my bar dark dark brown.
