    Lard

you should, with coconut makes absolutely white soap, almost translucent. And just like I said earlier, tallow speeds the trace a lot, with lard - it is very well behaved

    silicone cup for lye solution?

@melinda48 That is a good idea. Have to visit our local dollar tree store.

    silicone cup for lye solution?

I use small silicone bowl to measure my lye and then mix it with water in the plastic measuring cups. Nothing happens to silicone with lye. But I agree with flimsiness of the large silicone cups. I bought one for mixing lye solution and decided against that when I poured the water in it and...

Rosin and ROE, where to buy it

I used 30 mg in about 150 mg of coconut and shea butter mix. I just put it after melting butters and kept it worm. You can obviously see large particles of resin in the soap. Which in my opinion made it pretty, but I dough it has any benefits except of some exfoliating. I still have rosin left...

Rosin and ROE, where to buy it

I finally got to make a soap bar with frankincense resin powder several day ago. Tried really hard to melt the powder in coconut and shea butter mix. Got oils to around 160F and kept at it for 10-20 min, hoping that it will melt like pine rosin does. No luck. Smaller pieces might have melted...

    Lard

So I finally got the lard 2 days ago and did couple batches of soap yesterday. I LOVE it. I settled on 40% lard, 40% tallow, 15% coconut and 5% castor. First of all, the trace is very slow. It is perfect to do any swirls I ever wanted. With the first batch I wanted to do a hanger swirl, so I...

    Lard

Thanks everybody for your replies. I am glad I asked bout superfat %. I was going to do 5% with lard soap. Seems like everybody is having soap scum with 5%, so I will stick to 2% and will report later.

    Lard

The lard is arriving on Thursday. Will definitely try it this week and let you know. What percent superfat do you normally do? I usually set it to 5%. From what I understand, nobody is adjusting their formulas to account for additional citric acid, right?

    Lard

I am not so worried about antioxidants but citric acid will increase the superfat. The don't list the percentage so there is no way to figure out what is the increase in NaOH to compensate for it. But if you guys are not noticing the difference, I guess I will just do superfat at 3%, and if it...

    Lard

Thanks. Just bought the Snow Cap. Wanted to try lard in my soap for a while, especially since it is supposed to slow the trace. I normally use tallow, but it accelerates too much and I can't do any decent design with it.

    Lard

To those that buy lard in Walmart, are you guys concerned that Walmart lard has some additives in it? In Armour lard that we have in Walmart the ingredients listed are: LARD AND HYDROGENATED LARD, BHA, PROPYL GALLATE AND CITRIC ACID ADDED TO PROTECT FLAVOR. Any problems with these ingredients...

Rosin and ROE, where to buy it

I got frankincense, myrrh and mastic too. Really wanted a dragon blood, but they are out of small sizes and I don't want to spend $60+ for something I have no idea what it is. Now have to wait till the end of the month to try it. The most important thing is to actually remember why I bough it, I...

Rosin and ROE, where to buy it

'Wow, this https://apothecarysgarden.com/ has tons of different rosins. Did anybody try to use those in soaps? I wonder how frankincense powder will do in soap. And the dragon blood is very interesting too, it will probably make soap deep red. Going to buy both now. My collection keeps...

My unintended experiment and what came out of it

Thanks, @DeeAnna I was hoping for your answer. Still not sure what exactly happened there. I left it alone for several days and then mixed all batches together, then left them for another day and there was only small amount of foam left on top which I have discarded. The soap feels OK now. I...

Can I add salt in my LS lye solution to thicken the soap?

Thanks, @DeeAnna , for explanation. I did dual lye LS with 90%KOH 10%NaOH and it didn't make any difference in how thick it was. What I figured out is to dilute small batch of the soap with salt until it gets thick, then leave it for 2-3 days. Most of the time it will become a thick slimy jell...

    How Soap Kills COVID

@VikingChick, This pic is only showing the COVID virus outside the body. Once the virus is IN the body (nose, throat, lungs...) soap will be useless, unless one will be washing nasal cavity and rinsing the throat with the soap. And most of the time the virus is getting into nose/throat/lungs...

My unintended experiment and what came out of it

Last week and made @IrishLass creamy cocoa/shea GLS. Liked it, but felt like it didn't have enough bubbles for me. So I went on a quest to make something similar, but bubblier. I searched through this forum, internet, couple books on liquid soap making and decided on this: I measured my...

    Body Wash vs Liquid Soap

@IrishLass posted a very nice body wash recipe back in 2016 called My Creamy Cocoa/Shea GLS Tutorial (would attach the link, but have no idea how). It is a very nice body wash. Check it out.

Rosin and ROE, where to buy it

ops I didn't see all these replies until now. I ended up buying both on Amazon and last week already made Zanny's flex seed shampoo. So far so good. I didn't add any scent because I just LOVED how it smelled. The rosin made it smell just like freshly cut pine, I don't mind my whole body smell...

deep fryer oil for soap making

Thanks, DeeAnna. I was hoping you will chime in. I made some soap by now and know how to calculate KOH and what to add to make it cleansing enough for dishes. My concern was whether prolonged heating will change the chemical structure of the oil and effect the saponification value. It will not...
