    Using black colorants?

Admittedly I don't really.measure ... I make 2.2kg batches and if I want a good black I probably use at least a teaspoon if not a heaped teaspoon

    Using black colorants?

You know whats weird, I've seen people say that charcoal stains and mica doesnt I use charcoal for all my black soaps, quite a large amount, and the only one that has ever produced grey/black lather was the one I used black mica in

    Actual baths

I have a ginormous tub in this house. J can float in it. Although I'm pretty small so can generally manage a bath anywhere. I love a good hot bath and try for one every night. It's my down time. I take a snack, a bourbon, and a book and I stay in at least an hour, often falling asleep. The weird...

    Honey transformation in soap

I add honey to my soap because it increases bubbles, gives a faint scent and gives colour. Honey, milk and oatmeal is a staple favourite. I don't add honey thinking it's going to do all of the wonderful things you list. I don't want raw honey on my skin, ew. I'm not really sure what the point of...

SMF February 2020 challenge - Ione swirl

Welcome to the February 2020 Soap Making Forum’s challenge. This month’s challenge topic is technique based – the “Ione Swirl”. This is a swirl created by Ione from Eve’s Garden Soaps; it has been discussed here on the forum a few times with IrishLass giving it the name “Ione Swirl”. Both Ione...

SMF January 2020 Challenge Signup thread - Book Inspired

Gosh thank you everyone! Everyone's soaps were amazing, what a good start to the year. So inspired and well executed. I particularly loved @Kosmerta entry! Congratulations to @dibbles and @bookreader451 and everyone else who entered. Thanks also to @amd for hosting - I find non-technique...

To try again or move on

Layer designs are always good with accelerating fragrances too :) I separate the batter, colour it, and then add a bit of FO one at a time to each layer just before I pour it. It stays fluid to pour, and then sets up within a minute or two, while the rest of my portions are still sitting fluid...

SMF January 2020 Challenge Signup thread - Book Inspired

I have made many, many failed rims that didnt even make it to going into the mould, lots of confetti and soap dough LOL So while I'd had some half hearted attempts before, and its always been one of those things I wanted to do, I'd never really committed to it properly, or achieved it. This is...

SMF January 2020 Challenge ENTRY thread - Book Inspired

My entry is inspired by the timeless Lewis Carroll classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Still one of my favourite books. More specifically the colour scheme is from the 1951 Disney animated film which I grew up with and the two are fused in my mind. I created a rimmed soap (my...

    Soft Lard - Help Please

Not at all, i can't smell it either while it's rendering or when it's finished. If I out my nose right up to the container I can get a faint smell or pork and that's about it. Goat tallow smells a little distinct but I can't detect it in the soap even if it's unscented. My fat is generally fresh...

    Soft Lard - Help Please

Rendered lard is soft I render my in own lard and tallow. All I do is melt it in the crockpot and filter it, done. No need to do it three times or to add salt water IMO

    Making Large Batch Soaps

I'm approaching that many, probably about 30 I stock permanently although I'm still always experimenting and making one-offs. I 100% agree with everything cmzaha said above. I played around with slabs but in the end I get better results from my smaller loaf moulds. I only have two (joys of being...

    Cure Times

I was going to say, if you expect any of your handmade soaps to last 8 months I think you will be disappointed and I think that bar was a commercially made soap.
