August 2021 SMF Soap Challenge - Ombre Designs

Any chance of a making-of video? These are gorgeous, I'd love to see exactly how you do it!

Getting to the bottom of the mold

Haha, that brings me back!! If we wanted black we had to mix it ourselves from yellow, cyan and magenta, there was none premixed to use...

What are these translucent spots in my CP Soap?

I haven't a lot of experience with ricing, only tiny amounts from fragrance testing, but to me, yes those look like riced lumps that didn't get blended in.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Hey Peachy, welcome back! You were missed. Today I cut a soap that mum and I made yesterday. The flower is soap dough and the rest has a small amount of rhassoul clay. It's scented with 6 parts sandalwood, 2 parts patchouli, 1 part lemon supreme fragrance. We call it "Dirty Hippy" 😁

    Magnetic soap holders

Ooh that's a point... (Visions of soaps jumping around the room to attach themselves to random metal objects...)

    Dual lye in cp question

Would this also help lather in a soap that was high on butters? 🤔

    Magnetic soap holders

Yeah magnets in the soap is where my mind went to as well, I have a bunch of these knocking around the office...

What soapy thing have you done today?

It's from a recipe from aroma-zone, very simple! I'm in bed now, but from memory it's mostly water, and an ingredient called natur'lift which I get from them that provides the hold. Then some glycerine, preservative, fragrance, and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate for the moussing action. It's all...

What soapy thing have you done today?

As part of my soap diet (and because I don't have a lot of free time at the moment) I've been branching out into other toiletry products that don't take as much time or effort to make (and also that make smaller batches so I don't accumulate a backlog...) This morning is hair styling mousse...

    A question about micas

It's always good to know! Even if it's too late for me it may help another desperate soul! 🤣

    A question about micas

At least I've just used up the last of that batch! I learned my lesson well from those and I'll be using liquid dyes or PS80 from now on, definitely.

    A question about micas

I tend to use quite saturated colours in my soap and haven't had any issues with residue. The only mica traces of any kind are from an early batch of bath bombs which I coloured with mica and also used coconut oil, they leave an unfortunate yellow greasy rim in the bathtub :(

Entry Thread for the SMF August 2021 Challenge - Ombre Designs

Despite an ambitious declaration of intent, I ran out of time for the execution and had to simplify the design to some extent. I was thinking to do a black to light blue ombre wave, and then pour the ombre sky as a separate batch, but we're very busy at the moment with chicks and I couldn't...

    On the drawing board

Contrary to some other opinions, I weigh my micas and prepare them separately, I never adjust after adding to the batter*. I know from testing the amount that gives a saturated or muted colour, and I plan that out when I'm calculating the volume for the mould. If I'm using more than one...

    Aquarium tubing molds?

Having tried to get various types of gelled materials out of tubing I would say - you're better off making the embeds using soap dough rolled out by hand, I can't imagine that soap in any reasonable progressed stage will come out in a piece, although I'm open to being proved wrong...

Thread titles and my very strange mind.

Not a title but... My early morning brain read this as alligator, and agreed that yes, that would definitely be likely to cause trouble.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Got my challenge attempt cut this morning, unlikely to be a winner, but a cute soap nonetheless and I'm glad I got it made! I used the 3d printed mould lined with parchment since I haven't got the silicone liner done yet, and it did the job perfectly, I got 4 nicely proportioned tall and skinny...

August 2021 SMF Soap Challenge - Ombre Designs

Made mine yesterday, finally! I had to simplify my intended design significantly since it would require a multiple day process for what I had intended to do, and my mum is visiting again so there hasn't been a lot of time for soaping. Put it in to CPOP last night before dinner and woke up at 2am...

    FO suitable for laundry?

In my experience (as far as I've been paying attention) it's more about the characteristics of the thing being dropped, i.e. viscosity will play a big part in how much can form into a droplet before breaking free...
