    can bacteria survive lye water?

Certainly in the 80s acid rain was a big thing! Although I feel it doesn't get mentioned so much these days but I wonder if air quality has really improved to the extent that it's no longer an issue?

    Too much thickening.

Limited experience soap with lotions but rather more with difficult sauces; what I would do is heat up the water phase of the missing ingredients then slowly add the heated over-thickened base while mixing vigorously You'll probably need to put in the full quantity of preservative at the end to...

Help with DIY Daily Shower Spray

So is your position that plastic is natural and not synthetic? Just trying to understand your stance since you seem to be using some of these words quite differently from how they're generally used here.

Another "How many of you ... ?" questions.

Ah, good idea adding the water - I do this too sometimes by putting the scraps into a bar press, but it can be a crap shoot as to whether it ends up crumbly. I should try dampening it next time!

Another "How many of you ... ?" questions.

Nougat-intensive methods not being an option for me... Or it creates a new stash... 🤣

    Some new soaps!

Omg I LOVE your seascape! The touch of foam on the shoreline is perfection.

Another "How many of you ... ?" questions.

I plane all of them, and bevel when I feel it will add to the aesthetic. I make soap purely for my own enjoyment and as a creative outlet and I find that planing brings out the pattern more clearly because the surface is completely smooth.

    Soap Planer?

I have the one @Carly B linked - on the underside there's a screw so you can adjust the position of the blade to remove as much or as little as you want.

    Lost in lotion bars

Well, if your recipe needs 100g of ingredients and you want to add something at 1% then you need 1g of that and 99g of the rest... Likewise for 2% you need 2g and 98g of the rest. If your recipe is not 100g exactly (more than likely) then you need to scale up by the amount needed for the total...

Design for dark&dull base batter – Swirl suggestions

It needs to be a swirl? My recent Dirty Hippy soap would work with that kind of background - I was actually intending it to be more dirt-coloured behind the flower. Otherwise I think a secret feather with bright yellows and/or reds could really pop against a dull background. I'm not entirely...

    Red Colorant - Where?

I had the same problem - a lot of research led me to the conclusion that a brick red-ish mica plus a dark pinkish red one plus a touch of orange neon is what's needed. I've been pretty happy with the results the couple of times I took this approach. Theoretically it shouldn't lock you into any...

    Old Fragrance Oils

@John Harris I think you had some info to share on this?

How do you reconcile this: With this? In fact, I would think disallowing "chemical processes" rules out a very large number of things?

How to choose a fragrance oil?

Doing your own testing is definitely best since your recipe can affect how the FO behaves. I had some very interesting and unexpected results when I started testing systematically!

    Citirc acid calculator

(I'm pretty sure I got mine for spherification, but I can't seem to find the recipe any more 😢 )

    Hi

Welcome! I've already been appreciating your posts, glad you broke your long silence!

Before I buy, a question on colorants

I use only micas*; have tried a few oxides but I find them a bit unpredictable. I have a set of primary and secondary colours (I e. 6) of mica that I'm happy with *plus activated charcoal and titanium dioxide and I use those to mix whatever other colours I want.

    CPOP and heat transfer method

I would think that with the heat transfer method you're starting out with less heat overall in the soap? Warm lye + cold oils rather than warm lye and warm oils? So from that point of view there doesn't seem to be any extra risk in CPOP, unless you're using extra-hot lye to compensate? 🤔

    Thickening LS experiment #1

I tried something similar a while back. Would be very interested to see how yours turns out; after a week or so mine was very determined to be a layer of rather thick gel with the remainder of the liquid soap sitting on top and not getting involved in the whole business...
