    Simple Recipe for a Beginner

Definitely not ... but for a new person it's a Good Idea (TM) because when she says "did I get false trace?" we can ask important things like "how hot were your oils and your lye?" Without that information we'll be guessing. A new person also has no reference for cool, warm and hot. A quick...

He said it's fine, don't even bother asking. :)

Shaving Soap - Want to Make It?

I thought I would show a pic of the difference between soap with SL and Ti and without: With (this is my "keeper" portion, the others look nicer): Without: A pretty big difference. Now I have my suspicions about salts made with sodium rather than potassium ... but the shave...

    Simple Recipe for a Beginner

Bamagirl, get yourself one of these while you are collecting supplies and equipment: Non-contact Infrared Thermometer At $13 you will find it invaluable. You can then figure out the temp of your lye and your oils so you need not worry about false trace OR a soap volcano.

    Cute new mold

Oh my ... that's a collector's item! Admittedly they are not too expensive but I'm not sure I would run the risk of ruining one with raw soap. Of course the more people that do that, the more they are worth. :) What sort of shape is your box in? That's actually called a "finger joint"...

Shaving Soap - Want to Make It?

Maybe DeeAnna or someone else more versed in chemistry will chime in here on this, but here's my hypothesis. Sodium Citrate is ridiculously soluble in water at an almost 1:1 ratio. Your precipitate is almost assuredly not citric acid. What can it be then? It depends. I see two...

Shaving Soap - Want to Make It?

I thought I would report on a refinement I made. The basic recipe was just that - basic. This time I used TiO2, SL, and EDTA. 3.96% Sodium Lactate 0.79% EDTA 0.50% Titanium Dioxide All percentages of oil weight. The SL, EDTA, and the 11% glycerin already in the recipe were added...

Is doing M&P Cheating? Like a Box Cake Mix?

And you will be derided by more than a few CP soap makers and possibly granted a nice letter from the FDA. That's all in a different thread I think. I love the creativity I see in some M&P soaps. The same people can probably do the same thing with CP. Creativity is creativity - DaVinci was...

My first shaving soap is a success!

    Yep. Soap is soap.

And all us 'non thanks giving ' people are like....

Normally it's Reams for everyone but I forgot to buy them and we're having an ice storm so hand made seemed easier.

And all us 'non thanks giving ' people are like....

I just had a big bowl of turkey soup with hand-cut egg noodles. G'night! :)

And all us 'non thanks giving ' people are like....

Thanksgiving and the 4th of July are the two holidays I work the hardest. I deep fried only two birds this year because we only had a few people. After that I render the bones down to stock, and make the best turkey soup ever! I'd be surprised if the cops paid for coffee. Don't forget they...

My first shaving soap is a success!

The consistency is that of mashed potatoes, so you could pipe the containers I suppose. Really, scooping does not take that long. With the tins I use (4.5") and the generous portioning (7 oz), a 44# batch would be right at 100 containers. For that many I would skip the heartache of trying...

    Mica/glitter particles

And you are an environmental engineer? An ENT? Thoracic Surgeon? Representative of the EPA? Silica in the lungs is bad news and some people have been impacted by something as brief as a few weeks in the desert. Time and money spent on safety is the best investment we can make. If you wear...

    Mica/glitter particles

The manufacturer states the toxic dust cartridges with which it comes equipped (P100 NIOSH class) filter 99.997% of dust 0.3 microns and larger. That's good. I use the same ones for my pyrotechnics work, where I am working with chemicals that are outright toxic. For those who cannot...

    shaving soap

I'm looking forward to hearing the results IL. You are still going to do the same recipe, different lye only?

    Mica/glitter particles

You don't want particulates in your lungs, period. The smaller/finer they are, the deeper they will go. Wear a mask if your process raises dust or if you are the least bit concerned. It's cheaper than lung cancer. Mica is a silica, silica causes silicosis, silicosis is not fun.

    shaving soap

I *really* think you folks should try 100% KOH, or have your partners try it. There's a large difference in the slip. You can make pucks with it when you use low water. They are hard enough to handle and soft enough (think cold modeling clay) to squish into whatever you want. For a brush...

    Tattoos

When my ex wife (one of them! :-P) was married to her first, he told her "no tattoos!" He went out on 30 day maneuvers and when he got back she had seven. Not like she had you seven, she had 7 tattoos. :)

Shaving Soap - Want to Make It?

Yes sir. Almond really enhances it - not sure you would know it was in there by just smelling it.
