SMF November 2024 Challenge - Hello Yellow!

I wanted to do a design with multiple yellows so I ordered micas which then got delayed in the mail 😭 they’re expected to arrive on the 22nd now, so I’m not sure I’ll have enough time to soap and cut but I’m trying to keep hoping. I may do a backup soap tomorrow just in case.

What soapy thing have you done today?

2 batches of soap made! A 400g loaf of goat milk soap (first time! Used goat milk powder) and a 1000g loaf trying a new swirling technique, a practice for my challenge soap.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I’m dithering over my oil blend and probably overthinking it. I want to try a low-coconut oil bar, and I don’t have any palm oil so I’m somewhat lost. Currently I have: Olive - 30% Shea butter - 20% Coconut -15% Castor - 5% I’m missing 30%. Worried that if I use 30% grape seed it will be too...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I attempted layers which did not come out as planned :( they’re not level (which I knew to expect) but I also got some breakage along the color changes which was disappointing. I did spray 99% isopropyl between the layers and I did drop the mold after filling to attempt to knock out all the...

FO not suitable in cold process

If it is safe for melt and pour and bath bombs but not CP soap, I would expect the issue is the fragrance will not make it through the high PH plus temperature changes of saponification. That would make it unsuitable for hot or cold process soap.

I have soaped! The stripes are definitely not even but we’ll see how the bars look after cutting.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Thank you so much everyone! I shall go forth with both sodium lactate and sugar with confidence.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Can I use both sugar and sodium lactate in a soap recipe? I can start a new thread with this question if need be but it seems very small of a question to me. I'm trying a new soap recipe with 15% coconut oil (I usually do 30-40%) and I want to add some sugar to compensate and get a better...

What soapy thing have you done today?

3rd batch of soap, 1st drop swirl, 1st full gel! I took the advice I received last week to use less water and it worked out great! I went from a 2.5:1 water:lye to a 2:1 ratio. No glycerin rivers that I can see. Definitely having trouble with air bubbles (my tiny batch size makes it very...

What Bath & Body Thing Have You Done Today?

I tested out my foaming bath salts today. I made two small batches, one colored with Mica and one plain. The bubbles and water were nice, but overall I’m not thrilled with either, mainly because both seemed to clump somewhat in the bath and didn’t fully dissolve without my agitating the water a...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Soap #2 ever! Looks like I got partial gel phase, though I’m not sure what all the lines in the gel phase center are? I do see lots of air bubbles too. Lots of room for improvement of course.

    Another Hello!

I did! Thank you for asking. Last Saturday I made a very plain boring loaf. I cut it a tad early and it didn’t go through gel phase but I think it was overall a passable first soap. I’ve just finished pouring my second loaf where I’ve introduced colors! Riveting stuff :) I’ve increased the...

What soapy thing have you done today?

I think (desperately hope) I have managed a two color soap. No swirling designs or anything, just two layers of color one on top of the other. I’ll find out how that went when I cut in ~48 hours and I’ll know if I need to change anything for an attempt at swirling next Saturday!

    Lotion bar size

Ooohhhh that’s smart! Definitely borrowing this idea when I get there :)
