Possible to make sodium stearate from stearic acid?

I wasn't implying the sodium stearate can be listed were if to come from tallow, but that's a good point to make clear. My point was that while one *can* make sodium stearate first to add to soap, one does not *need* to make sodium stearate first to make the soap. One can have the same outcome...

Possible to make sodium stearate from stearic acid?

DeeAnna and Resolvable Owl have covered the important points. I'll go a different direction though and ask why you need straight sodium stearate? Could it be a recipe for a soap you're trying to duplicate from ingredients list? If that is the case note that you don't need straight sodium...

    Understanding superfat

Yes, and in reality the difference probably would only be half that because they are not picking from extremes like I did. Mostly did it to show there *IS* a difference.

    Understanding superfat

I'm going to expand on this even further thinking on this issue. Standard 100 g oil 5% "lye discount" These next two results are recipes with "superfats" forced by removing 5% of a specific oil from the calc to get the discounted lye numbers: 100 g oil subtracting 5% for a manual superfat...

    Understanding superfat

This is an interesting point. This reminds me of the superfat vs. lye discount and whether they're different. I've never gotten too deep into the lye discount vs. superfat specific discussions, but now I'm highly interested. Four results- 0% Superfat, 100 g oil saponified: 5% Superfat, 100 g...

    Rice/potato soap makers:

Here is a dumb question that I haven't seen addressed-does the starch in potatoes or rice contribute anything that sugar wouldn't?

Advice on getting rid of that "squeaky clean" feeling?

Good news-your soaps last forever. Bad news....your soaps last forever! Lol, I don't sell nor have many friends who'll take soap off my hands, so I guess I'm sticking with hard water a while till I figure out a scheme that'll let me make soap as I please without dealing with storage fees. 🤣

    Help

It looks like most of the remaining recipe percentages that were left off in the original post. It's probably a matter of information overload and not knowing what's critical to know and what can be left out. New thing (soaping), new format for expression (forum), new tools (soap calc), and new...

It's not all that it's cracked up to be.

Cat&Oak, you've far more courage than me. I spent 7 years collecting tools, ideas, and knowledge to start my own business. I built furniture, and my location would have been a goldmine for the type of stuff I created. I did not proceed, and I'll leave it there-this ain't about me. Don't beat...

    greetings from Texas

With YouTube one *can* become a YouTube critic, heck that platform has spawned the game walk through genre. I agree on the whole though, small batching is the path. Anyway, welcome fredntan, this is a huge hobby that will instantly hook you and give you years of exploration. Quite a few avenues...

Shave Soap Insights about Tallow Shave Soaps

I'm sure you've noticed by now, but shipping is not cheap (if you're getting heavy bulky stuff).. I don't think it's cheap anywhere right now, but at least some of the prices offset the shipping.

Shave Soap Insights about Tallow Shave Soaps

This. The article could have been framed a bit better. Seems like it was more an opportunity to get on the soap box. The lanolin one was quite strange, it's right there on the label and is usually very far down on the list of ingredients with tallow and stearic number one and two. Anybody over...

Shave Soap Insights about Tallow Shave Soaps

I'll tag along with a source for stearic not commonly mentioned-soy (and not the wax). FromNatureWithLove has soy derived stearic acid for quite a reasonable price, on sale right now for $18.76 for 10 lbs. I know you're good with RSPO, but this stuff is near as cheaper as palm (for now) in...

In the still of the night....2 shave soaps

Your eyes do not deceive you my friend. That HO sunflower oil was originally infused with Himalayan Rhubarb for a pink bar soap I made 2.5 weeks ago. I'm kinda surprised it showed up at 5% here. And thanks! When I get to using SL they may look as tight and clean as yours eventually.

In the still of the night....2 shave soaps

I missed this post, but yes I have noticed the same. Some popular soaps have avocado or almond oil which have some benefit, but I wonder how much it's inclusion has to do with it's perception and cachet. I'm mainly interested in fatty acids and don't want to discount a perfectly acceptable oil...

In the still of the night....2 shave soaps

Fair warning, messy post and soap incoming... Super RBO 3: I took break from RBO last week and put one of Carrie Seibert's recipes on deck, finally incorporating butters. It turned out to be the best shave soap I've tried yet and personally speaks to the importance of following a tried and...

Perfect little tall skinny loaf mold

I'm impressed with those lime embeds. They look absolutely perfect, down to the clear fruit part.

    Additives and Lather (Bubbles)

Interesting that sorbitol caused a drying sensation, I've read of it's humectant properties similar to glycerin. I wonder if this is an interaction with hard water, the "everyone's skin is different" thing (like Castile), or some other factor.
