Stearic Acid-when an ingredient just ain't so.

It doesn't specify, but here are the clues that indicate it is not pure SA fatty acids: "C16-C18 98%" refers to the carbon chains, stearic has 18, palmitic has 16. It appears this stuff is 98% palmitic and stearic acids. Also, listed in synonyms in that document is "stearic- palmitic acid...

Stearic Acid-when an ingredient just ain't so.

I'll preface this thread by stating I've learned a lot in this little journey. Biggest lesson is you cannot trust soap calcs to always be right. This stearic example is one of a few I have personally dealt with, however there are some other fats that are problematic. Second lesson is you cannot...

Shave Soap contenders-comparing SA and PA

That's ok, and no need to apologize. I probably should have included more of a back story on why I formulated the recipes the way I did-and big reason was having difficulty finding a good stearic acid source. The reason I picked palm oil for the palmitic was that it meshed well with kokum and...

    Underrated and Overrated Soaping Ingredients

I could be wrong here but I think she meant the smell doesn't come through. Previously contrinokathy mentioned using neem in all soaps and loving it.

Shave Soap contenders-comparing SA and PA

Hey all, I plan on making 2 shave soaps to compare the differences between palmitic acid heavy and stearic acid heavy recipes. I've managed to formulate two recipes with roughly the same FA profiles, save of course for the SA and PA numbers. As with many things in life where compromise has to...

    Underrated and Overrated Soaping Ingredients

Interesting, I might have to put this to the test. Really digging the feedback, especially as someone who hasn't soaped a whole lot.

    Post your Gripe

I'm a tech. This makes me laugh so much. I'd say a good 25% of the machine problems I come across are solved by either unplugging, or resetting. The number goes up to 33% if you include variations of "start from scratch" (new product, emptying and refilling), and up to 50% if you include...

    Post your Gripe

Around here it doesn't take snow to make bad drivers, heh. My gripe: is it me or does Walmart just want to get rid of store brands? I swear, laundry detergent, dish soap, bandaids, transmission fluid...I could go on-always sold out. I was ecstatic the last time I found 2 (TWO!) big bottles of...

Shave Soap Yet Another Shave Soap Thread looking for Advice/opinions Please :)

I feel you I have a mess of tabs still open and about 40 downloaded COAs, spec sheets, and SDS sheets to purge now lol.

Shave Soap Yet Another Shave Soap Thread looking for Advice/opinions Please :)

Alas...it is not so. @Mobjack Bay has discovered and fine tuned actual SAP numbers and the FAs of what soy wax composition is and unfortunately it is not fully hydrogenated. These threads describes her arduous journey: https://www.soapmakingforum.com/threads/gw-415-soy-wax.78212/...

Fully hydrogenated soybean oil is about as easy to find as pure stearic acid. :-/ I would have accepted that for my purposes in lieu of SA. I was told MMS had some, but they will not confirm the FA content.

Fragrance Buddy- anything I just *have* to get?

I'm ok with discoloration, I don't do a ton of design work. Based on first impressions I think I'll enjoy Citrus Tree better in soap after a cure. Out of the bottle it smells a bit strong for me. I don't want to judge it quite yet, but I already like it more than NG's neroli. :)

Another interesting note-a ton of oleic. Found that funny since some object to OO in their soap. I guess with tallow it's not really necessary. :p

Shave Soap Yet Another Shave Soap Thread looking for Advice/opinions Please :)

That's what I'm figuring. I'm of limited scientific knowledge though and some of these experiments are pretty interesting but difficult to follow. I've found one pulling straight oleic acid out of soap, and it was considered a failure lol. Might have to break this into its own thread heh.

Shave Soap Yet Another Shave Soap Thread looking for Advice/opinions Please :)

Interesting idea. I'm thinking kokum butter. Very little palmitic in there and maybe the oleic will be easy enough to separate from stearic here. Even if I can't break apart palmitic from stearic the ratio is great to begin with. Edit-I began my search on Google and the very first site was...
