What soapy thing have you done today?

I used regular table salt. There's a photo of the salt box below. The grit is pretty fine. The salt bars are relatively smooth. As usual, I'll wait and see what happens.

    Cleaning Utensils after Soap Making

Thanks. I tossed the cracked cup and used a wet paper towel and butter knife to clean the soap cutter. I know that orange based cleaner from the Dollar Store. Looks like I need another trip there. Thankfully, there's one in my local shopping center. I'm going to look for this the next time I...

    Cleaning Utensils after Soap Making

I can't leave my things in the kitchen once I've finished making soap. However, I find that some of the plastic measuring cups don't come clean. I use Dawn Ultra yet they still have a greasy coating once dry. One of the hard plastic cups that had lye in it has a fine line crack going up the back...

    How much is enough?

I'm actually looking for stainless steel bowls at a reasonable price, meaning finding them at the thrift store.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I made my first (possibly last) salt bars late last night. The recipe said to cut them after 4 hours. I was asleep at that time and cut them this morning (11 hours later). Some of them crumbled, but not all of them. I liked the feel of the exfoliant as I washed the residual off my hands. The...

    How much is enough?

I'm a beginner and I didn't spend a lot of money. I followed advice here, but I always knew about the Dollar Store. I was concerned about using plastic for the lye-water. I thought it might melt, but it didn't. Then I read the using glass could have the lye etch the glass. Many of the supplies I...

    Soap Ingredients

Very comprehensive. I read some of the link you listed. The process is very complex.

    Soap Ingredients

I found this website that sort of explains it. It also has photos and says "dont' try this at home." http://baudelairesoaps.com/baudelaire-blog/what-the-heck-is-triple-milled-soap-anyway-and-why-should-you-care/

    setting up a work area

Since I'm new to the process, I follow the rules, long sleeves (and shoes), gloves, open windows (regardless of weather conditions). I find I need to move the mixture away from the window or it cools before my oils are ready. So far, I have mixed the water-lye with the oils at the 110 degrees...

    Cure Times

I went back to the store today and looked at all the soaps. Some had triple-milled right on the packaging. Others did not, but felt as hard as the milled one. I bought a few that were on sale for $1.00 or $2.00 because they smelled so good. One is from Italy (totally vegan) and one is from...

A picture of ricing, volcanos, separating, overheating

Is ricing a HP issue or does it happen in CP too?

    Cure Times

I agree, now that I read a comment about triple milled soaps. The next time I'm in one of those stores, I'm going to see if I can find the manufacturer and read up on their products. It might tell me. The soap was $4.00 USD a bar. The bars are 4 x 2 x 1 inches. They smell great, lather quickly...

    Unmolding Times

Thank you. I think from all the replies I've received, the answer is experience and experimentation. So far I haven't had any issues that I read about. The soap smells wonderfully. I have it in the house (the heat is on, since it's winter here. I see no ash on the soap or weeping. One batch was...

    Unmolding Times

This is what I have done. In the future, I'll be sure to continue checking it that way. So far I haven't had any mishaps. I made the soap using the Black Amber Lavender EO and didn't know it would turn chocolate, but other than that the soap is fine.

    Unmolding Times

Good. At least on this I'm OK. Does this have anything to do with storing it in a garage? My garage is too cold in winter, too hot in summer. I'm keeping it in a corner of the dining room, out of the sun and heat controlled.

    Cure Times

It was due to family asking for soap when they saw the first few batches I made. The 16 bars produced by the 72 oz won't be enough for all those who want it, but I have others from smaller batches. The process didn't take that long and it's come out looking great. It's curing now and the room...

    Cure Times

No, I didn't. The soap was wrapped for Christmas and I didn't think to get them. I didn't know I was going to think it was different from anything I found at the local supermarket until I used it for the first time. Then I didn't know it was going to last as long as it did. As I couldn't find it...

Yes, I used the soap calc and printed everything out. I attach the soap calc sheet to the curing soap, so I know the ingredients and proportions.

    Cure Times

I haven't done any salt bars, but I did a 100% OO (not pomace). I'll wait longer on that one. I noticed from your posts that you use HP. I only use CP at this point. I think my cure times are going to go longer. I want hard bars that lather a lot. I got into this because I bought a bar of soap...
