What Bath & Body Thing Have You Done Today?

I’m not concerned about the 100% tallow LS being opaque. Ah, so sequestering is for the dilution. Not the paste. Got it.

How long have you been soaping? Or Happy Soap-A-Versary to me

I’ve thought about it. I’ll try tonight and report back!

How long have you been soaping? Or Happy Soap-A-Versary to me

Happy soap-iversary! I made my first batch of cold process soap late March 2020. I was sooooo nervous the first time I opened a bottle of sodium hydroxide that I’d had in my garage for a good five years. I just didn’t ever feel ready to make soap. Also, I was nervous about working with sodium...

    SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

To compare, a Tiger Swirl soap I made about a year ago that my entry was SUPPOSED to resemble. My entry soap was my second go at the design. My first attempt, the colors were all wrong. The top, to quote my hubby, looked like “baby poop.” With that feedback, I had no choice but to break my...

ENTRY THREAD for SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

This was supposed to have been a perfectly executed Tiger Swirl soap. Uuuuuunfortunately, trace progressed to an unexpected stage so I had to improvise. Used squeeze bottles to layer the blue/orange, then poured a layer of white, then a drop swirl with remaining batter and the addition of black...

What soapy thing have you done today?

Also made a batch of Apple Bourbon Butter soap. Used three FOs: BB’s Macintosh Apple, Nature’s Garden Pumpkin Apple Butter, and FB’s Bourbon Barrel.

What soapy thing have you done today?

I’m not a huge fan of Raspberry and Vanilla fragrance oils. They’re kinda meh. So I combined Blueberry Thyme from BB and NS’s BRV and it smells lovely. Not as meh.

What Bath & Body Thing Have You Done Today?

Made my first batch of liquid soap! 100% tallow. First time using KOH. Will sequester it in my cooler untill tomorrow. I’ve seen some people sequester their soap paste, and some don’t. For my first go at it, decided to sequester for no other reason than I want to see what the paste loons like...

    SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

After you plug your usual recipe into a calculator, in addition to the lye vince t ratio setting you input, it will tell you what your water:lye ratio is. A 1.8:1 water:lye is 35% concentration. I ran into a trace problem whilst trying to recreate a soap I made a while ago. To quote Boss Ross...

    100% beef tallow soap

I make a foot balm using tallow and it’s lovely. Definitely want to try it in a lip balm.

No difference really. I just understand it better in terms of ratios. 🤪 Lye concentration is the same as ratios, just notated differently. @AliOop explained it nicely.

Well This Hasn't Gone To Plan

Are you saying you used 6 teaspoons of titanium dioxide? Yes, that is definitely quite a lot of TD. A little goes a long way and too much can definitely make for very thick batter and speedy to trace.

    SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

It’s very much a tactile determination. Too soft and what should be a clean plane becomes more of a smear. Usually, I give my soaps a week before I’ve planned/beveled them after the cut. But it depends on your recipe. And if you’ve allowed them to gel or not. Or even your sf% and/or water:lye...

    SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

Thanks to the fact that I work from home on Mondays, I cut my soap a little bit ago. It’s…interesting. 😂 There are layers in there…somewhere…so I think it qualifies. It will have to do. 😜 I can relax the rest of the month and let it rest so it can harden up to prepare for planing and beveling.

I have so much soap... [Imaginary Audience]: How much soap do you have?? ...I have so much soap that I could clean the Taj Mahal from top to bottom, inside and outside, and still have soap left over.

    SMF June 2023 Challenge: Layers!

I broke my "one and done" rule this weekend. The top of my first entry, that I made on Saturday, to quote my husband, looked like "vomit." 🤪 Licking my wounds (and pride), I decided to make a second "entry" yesterday. I rushed the process. In my haste, I weighed out the wrong fragrance oil...

Made my entry. Did not go as planned and had to switch gears midway through the execution. But it will have to do.

    Oils Question

Monkeying with different percentages of fats to change the properties of the resulting soap is the funnest part of making soap. Definitely learn what the fatty acids are and what they translate to in a bar of soap. And learn how they relate to each other. During your experiments, make really...
