How much soap is in your house?

I have ALMOST enough. ALMOST. Summer is busy with fruit and canning though, I'll "get around" to making soap as soon as I finish getting the firewood in. I don't count the salt bars that are less than 9 months old 'cause they aren't quite ready. That being said I think there's enough soap around...

    Food coloring

Well drillers mud - bentonite clay. We have "dirt" here that is from the Mt. Mazama eruption ( Crater Lake) that comes in bands up to 6 feet thick. Sorry about the hijack. Back to the original thread....

    Walmart GV Shortening.

For the animal version of GV shortening I use the SAP value for lard. There are usually two different GV shortenings in WalMart here. One is animal and the other has palm in it.

Who here makes soaps fragrance-free, essential-oil free exclusively?

I have a customer that wants scent free. She gets it. I make a batch every 6 or 8 months for her. In the mean time others will trade me for the plain ones she doesn't want. It's really not a problem to do since some florals that I use move fast.

    What is room temperature?

The temperature that I can soap at and be able to use colors and different scents depends on the oils that are in the recipe. If I am using a recipe with a high percentage of lard, soy wax or coconut ( some are and) then I will need to soap cool and move fast. Water content also makes a big...

    Superfatting Questions for CP

Started at 7-9% now I typically use a lye discount of 2-3%. Salt bars will run 10 to 20% just because they are salt bars. I track the discount on the labels so when I use a bar that is properly aged I can tell what I like mo betta.

What soapy thing have you done today?

earlene, Do you have a Harbor Freight store near you? Nitrile gloves with coupon for $5 per 100. That's 10 cents per pair for the 5 mil gloves. I wait for the sales and buy a box or two. They work well as single use glove for me.

    Happy accident

Working on eating a blueberry pie right now. And trying to finish a batch of cake mix cookies from last week end. I refuse to start another rash of baking insanity until there's room on the counter. Then I'll drop some chocolate chip cookie dough into a batch of brownies....

    Post your happy

We have feeders up for 9 or 10 months each year. When we see or hear the first one of the year we put up a half dozen feeders and put a small amount of sugar water in each one. We haven't always seen as many as we do now. It seems like the little ones remember where they found food last year and...

    In trouble yet?

Metal exposure like the rack the soap is on in the picture above can cause DOS ( Dreaded Orange Spot). I would insulate the soap from the metal to prevent that. And NO lard/coconut soap should not turn colors and have orange spots. A rancid smell will usually follow the DOS.

    Non-Genetically Modified research resources

The last bit of this thread brings up questions for me. We humans have been modifying the genetic makeup of plants and animals as long as we have been farming. Maize became corn, we have beef and dairy bovines and fowl that lay eggs every day. All of those things just aint natural - we as a race...

Does anyone just let the vanillin win?

As has been said I embrace the discoloration and use it to make a swirl or other design. It's gonna happen anyway so why not use it to my advantage?
