    Can I use tap water?

I've used tap before with no problems but prefer the cleaner distilled water. I bought a 2 1/2 gallon carboy, the slim one, to hold my water in the fridge. With the spigot its easy to get water when I need it and its already chilled. I use only cold water in my soapmaking.

Where do you keep all your soap?

I have a soap curing room dedicated to my biz. I have several curing racks for my soap. I ended up buying cafeteria trays and lining them with wax paper. The trays are stackable so I can have several rows of soaps curing on the same shelf. Each shelf can hold up to 240 soaps and I have 8 shelves...

    neem oil

I use neem at 15% in my neem oil soaps and the scent never goes away. I find it has a natural earthy garlic scent. I use tea tree and lavender but more as part of the formulation for a healing soap rather than to "scent". Even at 15% the natural odor of the neem still comes through and you can't...

Gel Phase - is it necessary?

I agree re the scales. The scale you are using does not sound efficient enough for soap making if it is not registering your EOs. I also have an Escali KD scale which weighs in lbs, oz, and grams. I can weigh even the smallest amounts of powdered micas and EOs. You must be able to accurately...

    My first black colored soap

Really nice! My AC soap came out grey. Wish I could get that nice black shade you have.

Can I use vanilla extract in my lip balm?

I ran out of my coconut cream flavor oil and was wondering if I could sub vanilla and coconut extracts in my lip balms? I don't recall reading anywhere about using extracts so thought I should ask about it. If its okay, what % do I use?

    Olive Oil Vs. EVOO

I use regular cooking OO or pomace. I never use EVOO as it is not cost effective. Plus, whichever you use in your soapmaking you won't be able to tell the difference in the finished soap. Both will behave and feel the same from my experience. I would only use EVOO as a point of sale for say...

    soap colorants

I might try them out to see if they work well in M&P but I would be very reluctant to try them in CP. Its difficult enough having to work with colorants stable enough to survive the lye. So I only work with colorants identified as lye stable. You can find great soap stable micas, oxides, and...

I need some advise on an indoor FM issue

I don't get it. You say you were told the space is 6 feet. That doesn't tell you anything. A space needs 2 sets of figures like 6 ft by 6 ft or 3 ft by 6 ft. You should have asked for clarification. Also, if the space did not sound large enough why didn't you sign up for enough space? When I ask...

    Master Batch Lye Solid?

Interesting, learn something new every day. Never had this happen to me before but then I always make mine inside in my climate controlled house. Although it does get cold in some parts of the house I will be sure to put my lye master batch in a warm spot during the winter.

What are your favorite additives to put in soap?

I love milks in my soap and use a lot of coconut and goat milk. Other additives I use are honey, oatmeal, SL, charcoal, clays, pumice, purees, beer, aloe juice, silk. I have one recipe I use lanolin and glycerin.

Recipes - Cold Process vs Hot Process

There is no one reason people prefer one method over the other. I CP the majority of my soaps because I can make soap quicker and because its easier to make detailed swirled and complex color combos. I HP my soap when using difficult additives or FOs that don't work well with CP. I also use HP...

How to make beer soap - or not.

I pour my beer into a plastic pitcher and refridgerate it overnight. It goes flat that way and is ready for me to use the next day. I don't freeze it or boil it. But I also don't add it in my lye solution. I make that seperate and add my chilled flat beer to my soap batter. I love using chilled...

    Aloe Vera Juice

I use aloe vera juice for many of my soap recipes. As mentioned you can use it as your total liquid or part of your liquid. I like to keep my gallon jug of aloe juice in the fridge so its chilled and ready to use on soap making days.

What soapy thing have you done today?

Made some shaving soap today and tried out my new shaving soap molds from WSP. Will see how they turn out when I unmold them. It was hard getting the soap batter in because its thick and gloppy when I make it in the crockpot. I had to spoon the batter into the molds and it was quite messy for my...

Have You Ever Changed Your Business Name?

I did the whole biz name and logo and branding change a few years back. My new name is entirely different from my old name. I had to do it because I changed from a primarily candle making biz to a full soap making biz with candles as a seasonal sideline. So I couldn't have candles in my biz name...

need a suggestion for selling soaps .

After reading through this entire thread my response is forget this guy. He was not entirely forthcoming to you and just wants your hard earned experience handed to him free. I would just smile and walk away.... far away... Seriously, he will be trouble in the future based on how he approached...

    Pussy Bath

You can always get a hairless cat... but be warned they are high maintenance needing to be bathed regularly and in a temperature controlled environment due to not having the fur to keep warm. If you really want that cat you could try bathing it weekly but be prepared for a fight if it really...

Best methods for making speckles or "complex" coloring in soap?

I've seen photos of a soap with added banana in it. It had lovely brown flecks in from the banana seed. Also, I bought some vanilla paste and think that would also work with making specks in the soap. I still haven't used either yet but they are on my list of things to try just for the lovely...

    “Made from people for people”

All I could think of while reading this thread is Fight Club and how they would jump over fences in the middle of the night to steal bags of human fat from liposuction clinics. So that mental image plus the general ick factor is a double NO for this gal!
